  3. NASHVILLE Derrick Henry Jersey , Tenn. (AP) —quest for a second straight postseason ended with injured quarterback Marcus Mariota watching from the sideline .Luckily for the Titans, Mariota said a neck specialist has made clear only rest is needed — no surgery — to heal nerves frayed by injuries that knocked him out of three different games this season."What it came down to was just allowing time for the nerve to heal," Mariota said Monday. "Unfortunately, I've had several nerve injuries throughout the course of the year, and it just left me susceptible to a bigger injury. And when it came down to it, he felt through time and some rest, the nerve should calm down and it should fully recover." Without Mariota, the Titans lost 33-17 on Sunday night to Indianapolis to snap a four-game winning streak and miss out on the AFC's sixth and final playoff spot that went to the Colts. Mariota called sitting out "very disappointing."Mariota consulted with spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins of Los Angeles after being knocked out of a loss to the Colts on Nov. 18 and again after suffering another stinger to the neck Dec. 22 in a win against Washington. Mariota said the specialist reviewed an MRI exam and other tests with the decision for Mariota not to play made by both the Titans and the quarterback."I wasn't able to get to a point where I was ready to go," Mariota said. Now Mariota has time to heal, then get back on the field to prove whether he deserves a long-term contract past 2019. He already is under contract for 2019 since Tennessee picked up his fifth-year option at $20.9 million. Mariota said he's not concerned about contract talks, saying he wants to stay with the Titans.Coach Mike Vrabel said he has no concerns about Mariota, who completed 68.9 percent of his passes this season — a single-season franchise record."He helped us win a lot of games, and so I have full confidence in Marcus when he's healthy and available to go out there and try to win," Vrabel said. "He's done some good things."Not having his starting quarterback for a win-and-in regular season finale was just the capper to a very bizarre season for the rookie head coach. The Titans opened with the longest game since at least the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, a 27-20 loss in Miami that took 7 hours Kevin Byard Jersey , 8 minutes and cost Tennessee both three-time Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker for the season with a broken right ankle and Mariota who missed the next two starts. They lost not once, but twice by a point each when a receiver cut a couple days later dropped a would-be touchdown in Buffalo and then the Titans couldn't convert a 2-point conversion inside the final minute of a loss to the Chargers in London. They finished the season with 12 players on injured reserve — five starters: safety Johnathan Cyprien, Walker, right tackle Jack Conklin, tight end Jonnu Smith, cornerback Logan Ryan and four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jurrell Casey. Against Indianapolis, starting linebacker Brian Orakpo also was out with an injured triceps muscle.Defensive coordinator Dean Pees guided the Titans to the NFL's No. 3 scoring defense allowing 18.9 points a game for a huge improvement from 17th last season. Pees, who spent the night at an Indianapolis hospital on Nov. 18 after leaving the coaches' booth early against the Colts, will spend some time thinking about his future.Vrabel said he and the Titans want Pees back.If Pees does return, he won't have Orakpo, who announced his retirement Monday after 10 seasons, the last four with the Titans. Orakpo said he leaves with the Titans well-stocked at linebacker with Rashaan Evans, Jayon Brown and Harold Landry.Brown became the third NFL player this season to return an interception for a touchdown, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in the same game in the finale, and he had a career-high six sacks. Landry had 4 ½ sacks. After losing Walker Adam Humphries Jersey , the offense struggled and finished 27th in points scored per game. Derrick Henry finished second in the AFC with 1,059 yards rushing, and he has high expectations for 2019 once so many key players heal up."The sky's the limit," Henry said.Report: Titans talked to the Patriots about a Rob Gronkowski trade So maybe the Titans really did make an attempt to trade for Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski. Last week a report surfaced that the Patriots were shopping the all-pro tight end. The Titans were one of the teams named as a potential suitor, which wasn’t all that surprising considering the connection. That report was largely dismissed, but Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated confirmed that report this week. In an appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” Breer had this to say on the situation. Gronkowski is signed through the 2019 season, but his desire for a new deal seems to be the driving force behind the trade rumors. So according to Breer, Jon Robinson at least had a conversation with the Patriots about a potential deal for Gronkowski. We don’t know how far those talks got, but it’s interesting to think about what could have been. When healthy, there’s no denying that Gronkowski is one of the best players in the league. His addition would be fascinating, considering the fact that the Titans already have Delanie Walker on the roster. Walker does only have one year remaining on his deal. Gronkowski is still just 29 years old and clearly has plenty left in the tank, coming off of another 1,000 yard season. But the obvious question here is what the Titans would have had to give up to acquire him. What would you have given up to get Gronk to Nashville?

There’s no question that when it comes to comparing the two quarterbacks the Buccaneers have to offer, Ryan Fitzpatrick has a clear advantage in one category over Jameis Winston: his ability to connect on the deep ball. The big play ability of the Bucs’ offensive weapons has been on full display with the Magic Man under center Bryan Anger Jersey , while Winston still struggles mightily in that category in his fourth NFL season. At this point, it’s something that just may never be there for Winston. When Fitz spoke to the media Thursday, he talked about the big plays the offense has been able to convert on while he’s on the field; No question that if the Bucs are going to go into Charlotte and upset the Panthers, the big plays have to be there. Those back-breaking plays Fitz has been able to connect with Mike Evans, O.J. Howard Demar Dotson Jersey , and especially DeSean Jackson on can catapult this team to a win in a huge divisional matchup. There’s some optimism swirling around among Bucs fans now that Fitzpatrick is back on the field. Even for the most die-hard Winston defenders, there’s no denying that Fitz has been the better quarterback so far in 2018 and with his explosive play propensity, the Buccaneers have a puncher’s chance this week.
  5. from moving the ball Alfred Morris Jersey , the San Francisco 49ers defense has fared all right early this season. When it comes to generating the game-changing takeaways that so often determine who wins in the NFL, no team has been worse so far. There are many reasons why the 49ers are off to such a disappointing start with one win through five games, with the season-ending knee injury to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo the most notable. But a defense that has generated a league-low three takeaways for the fewest total for the franchise after five games since 1977 is a major reason why."We just have to find a way, that's all it comes down to," cornerback Richard Sherman said. "Takeaways are kind of more of a ball bounces your way, you get tips sometimes. Last week, we limited them pretty good. We have to be more violent in tackling and can't miss when the quarterback throws into coverage."Turnovers often come because of the pass rush and the 49ers have struggled there with no consistent edge rusher. They rank in the bottom half of the league in both sacks and quarterback pressures despite allowing the ninth fewest yards per play at 5.31.The only takeaways so far this season have come when Sherman recovered a fumble in the opener at Minnesota, Cassius Marsh recovered one after a strip sack by Elijah Lee against Detroit in Week 2 and Antone Exum had a pick-six on the third play from scrimmage two weeks ago against the Chargers. The team has generated no turnovers in the 113 plays on defense since then."We've had our opportunities this year," defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said. "There's an old cliche saying that, 'Catch the ones that are thrown to you.' We've had our opportunities, especially early in the year where I think we've dropped about three or four interceptions this year. We've gotten the ball out. We're taking shots at the ball. There's great intent. Takeaways come in bunches, they do. ... I know it's a result-oriented business, but the result is a product of the process that you go through within every play, within every day. If we keep attacking the ball the way we have and the D-Line keeps pressing the pocket and getting after the quarterback, I'm very confident that eventually they'll come."Trying too hard for turnovers can back fire, however. On the first play of a loss to Arizona last week, free safety Adrian Colbert jumped up in coverage anticipating a throw over the middle to Larry Fitzgerald.Instead, Cardinals rookie Josh Rosen targeted Christian Kirk deep and the play turned into a 75-yard touchdown because cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon didn't have the deep help he expected from Colbert on the play. The Cardinals gained just 145 yards the rest of the game but it proved to be enough in a 28-18 victory, especially because the defense provided no short fields for the offense, which began each of its 13 drives inside San Francisco's 40-yard line."When people feel like they need to do more than what they're being asked to do, that's when bad things actually happen," Saleh said. "Right now Mike Person Jersey , that first play, and A.C. will tell you, he'd love to have that play back, but the way they responded after that play and the way they came out and played and executed the defense all the way through, I thought was really good on their part to remain composed and to continue to fight all the way through the game." We all can agree (or hope at the very least) that the 49ers won’t get another chance like they have in 2019 for draft purposes. That chance is the No. 2 pick and a shot at filling a huge need. During the season, even in the preseason, the hole that burned through the team was need of a constant edge-rusher. Cassius Marsh is not the answer. Yes, he had five sacks for 2018, but 2.5 of those came against the Oakland Raiders and two others came against the Chicago Bears. That says more about the Raiders and the Bears than it does about Marsh. The 49ers need edge-rushing help. They also need a lot of other things. Michael Renner at Pro Football Focus put together a rundown of the No. 1 need of each team heading into the 2019 draft. The result is a bit surprising, because the need of the 49ers is safety: Well, part of the reason for the six different players is because the unit found a way to get injured every other week. If any position besides quarterback got kicked in the proverbial head, it’s safety. The 49ers were playing backups of backups at several points in the season, and when you do that my friends, it’s not going to end well. That said, safety is a definite need for the reasons outlined above. Durability is a big concern with the likes of Jaquiski Tartt, who plays well...when healthy. Jimmie Ward was able to spell things but he has his own injury issues. Adrian Colbert showed a lot of promise to end 2017, but his brief play in 2018 before going on IR was average. Safety does seem like an area of need, it’s also an area receiving the unlucky bite of a snake for injuries. D.J. Reed and Marcell Harris were brought in, and both weren’t bad for rookies, but I don’t think anyone is ready to crown them as the answer at the position just yet. The 49ers have invested in safety and it seems like they just can’t get anything dependable with the health issues. Maybe another high-pick is in order or maybe free agency is the route to go, but do you see safety as the 49ers number one need?
  6. in any true “rebuild” happening in the NFL is clearly exhibited in the case of the 2018 LA Rams. They did not rebuild. They just made necessary changes and got better virtually overnight. From 2005-2014 Tedric Thompson Jersey , the Seattle Seahawks went 17-3 against the St. Louis Rams. Then from 2015-2016, the Seahawks went 1-3 in those games despite the fact that the Rams went just 4-12 in the latter of those two years. In that offseason, the Rams hired Sean McVay to replace the fired Jeff Fisher, signed Andrew Whitworth to play left tackle, and added Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, and moved Lamarcus Joyner from corner to free safety. Yes, LA already had Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, Aaron Donald, and an incredible special teams unit in place, but they didn’t really “rebuild” at all ...They built. They had a few great pieces and they finally put them in a position to succeed and win games. In 2017, the Rams went 11-5 and won the division. With a little more time to get comfortable in their current positions, a few more additions, LA is now 8-1 and Seattle is the biggest underdog they’ve been in a game since drafting Russell Wilson in 2012. How quickly these things change: in 2016, the Seahawks were 6.5 games better than the Rams and less than two years later, few are expecting a Seattle victory in the Coliseum on Sunday. To get a better understanding of how far the Rams have come and what to expect this weekend, I sent five Qs to Joe McAtee of Turf Show Times and in kind he sent me five corresponding As.Joe also joined my on the Seahawks Chats podcast this week; any podcast episodes from me will now be availably exclusively to Patreon donors at only $2 per month. This will be an ongoing thing so please do pledge if you’ve enjoyed any of my podcasts (3000 NFL Mock Draft, Real in the Field Gulls, Seaside Chats) in the past! Me and Joe go way deeper than the five Qs below, but check ‘em both out.Now onto the Qs!Q: The Rams are 8-1 and undeniably in contention for the Super Bowl in a way that they haven’t been since 2001, but how significant are the issues on defense? Are you concerned that even if LA goes 15-1 that it might only take one Drew Brees or one big game from Cam Newton or possibly if he gets in there, Aaron Rodgers, to upend the Rams in the playoffs? Would you undo the Marcus Peters trade if you could?A: Pretty significant. The Rams have two issues right now: edge pass rush and coverage. The former is a talent issue. The latter is an execution issue.Pass rush off the edge used to be the strength of the entire Rams roster. The early Jeff Fisher era Rams had Robert Quinn and Chris Long and William Hayes and Eugene Sims at defensive end. They were talented and deep off the edge. But Sean McVay’s first year in charge had Robert Quinn, miscast in a 3-4 OLB role and clearly sapped by various injuries, and Connor Barwin who was brought in more for his knowledge of and experience in Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips’ defense. The Rams moved on from both and promoted from within bringing Samson Ebukam and Matt Longacre into starting roles where neither has flourished. Recently added Dante Fowler Jr. brings perhaps more talent but the cost of his arrival and the sheer fact the Jacksonville Jaguars were willing to part with him suggests he won’t be the panacea many Rams fans are hoping for.Coverage, though Tyler Lockett Jersey , doesn’t have such an obvious dearth of talent on the depth chart even while CB Aqib Talib is out injured. CB Marcus Peters is a two-time Pro Bowler who is coming off of a horrorshow against the New Orleans Saints. Fan Favorite CB Troy Hill’s career with the Rams has been a rollercoaster. He struggled in 2016 but was stellar down the stretch in 2017 including in the wild card playoff game. This year, he’s again been the subject to fan ire. CB Nickell Robey-Coleman is a stellar slot corner, but given his size has limitations of what he can be expected to do. And while S Lamarcus Joyner and S John Johnson III are positives in run support, Joyner has had a down year after a stellar 2017.The combination of the two has plagued the Rams for weeks now. And as to how concerned I am about it in big games, I’m understandably very concerned given that both aspects were exploited against the New Orleans Saints last week. It’s not something the Rams can’t find ways to win in spite of (they were 8-0 until last week after all), but it’s the sheer fact that you don’t get a whole series of games in football like in baseball, basketball or hockey. The NFL postseason is built on single game installments. And like you mentioned, it only takes one big game from a Drew Brees or whomever the Rams face when it counts to undo all the positives of this team and there are a lot.Would I undo the Marcus Peters trade? No. I think we’re looking at a low point, and it’s a bit hard to assess things at the lowest level. At season’s end when we have a full sense of how he performed especially after the regular season, maybe my answer would change. But the Rams brought a two-time Pro Bowl corner in at a cost less than a first-round pick. That the Rams haven’t gotten his best play is maybe a task for Phillips to take on quickly and turn things around. And if he does, maybe we’re looking at things a bit differently in a few weeks.Q: I was a bit surprised that the Rams could still find money and room for Dante Fowler at the trade deadline; how necessary was it to add a player like Fowler? It seems he was relatively active (one TFL, one PD) in his debut with the team, how do you expect him to rotate in and out with the other players at his position? A: I would put the level of “necessary” need very low. The Rams were 8-0 with the #12 defense in DVOA prior to last week (they’re now weighted down to 15, which still isn’t in the bottom half of the league) with wins over the Los Angeles Chargers and Green Bay Packers. So the issue isn’t one of a roster need. It’s whether they needed to address it, and I really don’t think we needed to (again...we’re 8-1...). I think the question is one of opportunity. The Rams had an opportunity to improve at best or add to at worst a position of roster need and at a pretty low cost; the Rams will send a third- and fifth-round pick to Jacksonville, but they’re likely to pick up a pair of third-round compensatory picks having lost WR Sammy Watkins and CB Trumaine Johnson to free agency. So I’d suggest it was more an opportunity with upside at low cost and not necessarily a need per se. If anything, the Rams will still have the roster need in the offseason that they’ll still need to address anyway. As for his rotation, he played more than 60% of the snaps in his first game with us. So I think it’s fair to say we’re going to see a ton of him down the stretch.Q: Jared Goff needs Todd Gurley more than Todd Gurley needs Jared Goff. True or False?A: I would say false because I think they both need each other and the receiving group equally. They were both on the field in 2016, and I’m not sure either needed each other much at all then. In fact, I’d suggest Jared Goff and Todd Gurley need the offensive line more than the line needs them. But the bottom line with the Rams’ offense is that they have components everywhere. Goff, Gurley, the wideouts, the line. They’re all (very good) parts of a whole that is absolutely cranking this year.Q: I really don’t mind just talking about Aaron Donald for a very long time. For as long as you’ve watched football, how many defensive players do you think you’ve ever seen play on a regular basis are better than Donald and why is it Bobby Wagner? A: Wobby Bagner.Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player as consistently dominant as Donald. He’s so central to opposing team gameplans and for obvious reason. And it’s just amazing because he’s different. The Rams list him at 280 lbs. The Seahawks have a full 16 players heavier. So he’s not the biggest guy. He’s not winning on sheer size, but he has plenty of power. It’s that his power is compact. And the application of it is FAST. And he’s just very, very, very good. And that makes me happy. So yeah, you should talk about him at length. Have you considered turning Field Gulls into an Aaron Donald blog? I think that idea has legs, Kenny.Q: I know you’ve heard of Michael Dickson because in the last meeting between these two teams the Rams blocked a punt of his Germain Ifedi Jersey , so let me ask you this instead: Have you ever heard of Michael Dickson’s revenge?Ooh is that like when you drink the tap water in Mexico and then your innards are all a hot pot of snot for like a week? After Brandon Marshall put together a disastrous performance against the Cowboys in Week 3, David Moore was inserted into the lineup, taking Marshall’s place in the Seahawks’ three WR sets. Lauded by Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson and Brian Schottenheimer throughout training camp for his ability as a contested catch receiver, Moore made an immediate impact, hauling in four touchdowns over the next four games. From Moore’s insertion into the lineup in Week 4, until Seattle’s win in Carolina in Week 12, Moore caught 22 passes for 413 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 4.4 targets per game. It appeared, as Tyler Lockett was becoming a bona fide star, the Seahawks had found an above-the-rim receiver to compliment him. However, in the six weeks that followed the victory over the Panthers, Moore caught just four passes for 32 yards and zero touchdowns, with his targets dropping to 2.6 per game. Moore’s disappearance from the gameplan was a curious turn in Seattle’s season. Granted, his numbers down the stretch would look a little better, had officials not incorrectly ruled a 34-yard touchdown reception against the Vikings as out of bounds. However, his season fizzled out with a zero target performance on Wild Card weekend. And while Moore’s production plummeted, his place in the offense remained. From Week 4 through Week 12, Moore averaged 41 snaps per game. From Week 13 through the Wild Card round, Moore averaged 40.6 snaps per game. Though he was playing nearly the same amount, Moore became a non-factor.Whatever the reason is for Moore’s massive drop in production to close the season, the Seahawks have to try to capture the eight week stretch he put together over the middle of the season, and have him maintain that level throughout 2019 and beyond. Lockett is a game-breaking talent, capable of creating a touchdown or a huge play out of nothing. Doug Baldwin, provided he’s healthy, will be as reliable (and devastatingly crisp in his routes) as ever next season. Moore has proven to be Seattle’s best above-the-rim threat, and he provides the Seahawks with a skill set that isn’t currently matched by anyone at the position. Now he just needs to do it over 16 games.

  8. SAN JOSE Ryan Strome Jersey , Calif. (AP) like breathing and eating were painstakingly difficult for Logan Couture heading into the playoffs a year ago.An errant puck had shattered his face and the injuries hampered Couture during San Jose’s first-round loss to Edmonton. They weren’t fully healed until the summer. The Sharks are counting heavily on a now healthy Couture to anchor a long playoff run this year starting Thursday night in Game 1 of their first-round series at Anaheim.”It was tough,” Couture said about playing through the injury a year ago. ”It was very difficult. I went from playing to not knowing if I would be playing in the playoffs. The injury, it affected my life more than hockey. It was difficult just waking up and dealing with day to day stuff. But I’m happy, happy to be healthy.”Couture was hit in the mouth a year ago by a shot from teammate Brent Burns and missed the final seven games of the regular season with two fractures in his face. He came back for the playoffs with plastic and wiring to keep his teeth in place and played all six games, scoring two goals in a Game 4 victory, but he was far from his usual self.Couture was a main factor in San Jose’s run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016, leading the NHL with 30 points that postseason before the Sharks lost in six games to Pittsburgh. He’s hoping for the same type of spring this year.”That was probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing hockey,” he said. ”Just a blast to go to the rink every day. That was a special group that we had that year. It’s different each year obviously when personnel changes. I think about that run quite a bit, just how much fun it was. Just hoping to relive it.”As well as he played during that run, Couture might be at his peak heading into this year’s playoffs after scoring a career-high 34 goals this season, posting 61 points and having the usual responsibility of trying to slow down the opponent’s top scoring line. That performance helped the Sharks overcome the loss of Patrick Marleau to free agency last summer and Joe Thornton to a knee injury in January and helped Couture win the team’s MVP award, although he has loftier goals still in mind.”I’ve felt good. The puck’s gone in for me. That’s the big thing. Just capitalized on opportunities. Scoring 34 goals is pretty cool. Definitely to be up in the top 20 in goal scorers in this league Womens Wayne Gretzky Jersey , in the best league in the world, is special for sure,” Couture said.”The season’s not over. Obviously the goal for myself, and as well as our team, is to win it all. It’s tough to say it’s been a successful year until the year’s done.”Couture will have plenty of responsibility this series to make sure the season doesn’t end too soon. He’ll be a main part of the top power-play unit, one of the team’s most important penalty killers, tasked with slowing down Ryan Getzlaf’s line and provide offense of his own.”The one thing about Logan is he has the ability to raise his level in important moments, in important times of the year as he’s shown in my time here,” coach Peter DeBoer said. ”I expect the same thing. I think we kind of take it for granted but that’s what he is. He’s a great player and he has that ability.”NOTES: DeBoer would not rule Thornton out for the series, saying only he wouldn’t play Game 1. … Eric Fehr and Melker Karlsson, who missed time late in the season, worked on the fourth line at practice Tuesday.— Now in his 22nd season as an NHL coach Aaron Ekblad Jersey , Ken Hitchcock likes what he’s seen so far in his latest gig even if wins have been hard to come by.Hitchcock will be behind the bench for the first time at Rogers Place as the Edmonton Oilers begin a three-game home stand against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.Ranked third all-time with 824 wins, Hitchcock became the Oilers’ 15th coach last Tuesday after the team fired Todd McLellan following a 9-10-1 start.Article continues below ...But Edmonton (10-11-2) lost for the eighth time in 10 games with Sunday’s 5-2 defeat to the last-place Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers surrendered three third-period goals two nights after giving up the tying tally in the final minute before losing in overtime to the Anaheim Ducks. After a 1-1-1 trip through California, Hitchcock still exudes passion.“I’m really impressed. I’m way more impressed than I am disappointed. I see a group that cares deeply,” said Hitchcock, who also guided the Stars to the franchise’s lone Stanley Cup title in 1999. “We’ve got to work on some things and I got after it today pretty good on the bench today a couple times to get people to change their thinking, but I see a lot (of) things as a coach you’ve got to like.”One of those pieces is winger Alex Chiasson, who scored twice Sunday and may have found a home with the Oilers – his fifth team in seven seasons. Originally drafted by Dallas in 2009, Chiasson has given Edmonton some unexpected secondary scoring after joining the team four days before the season opener. With 10 goals through 17 games, Chiasson is three markers short of tying a career high set over 79 games with the Stars in 2013-14, and he’s buying in to what Hitchcock wants.“We’re right in the mix here of doing good things.” Chiasson said. “It’s on us as players to take it to the next level. We have (three) games at home here coming up and those will be key games for us to play (at) home in front of our fans.”The Oilers are 4-4-1 at home, but have alternated losses and wins over the last seven games.Connor McDavid, a Hart Trophy winner looking for this third straight scoring crown Aleksander Barkov Jersey , looks to show up on the scoresheet against Dallas for the eighth time in as many career games. The top overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft has seven goals and four assists during his streak, which includes a hat trick in November 2016 in Texas. The Stars will try to avoid their fourth loss in five games after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. With less than three minutes left and Dallas (12-10-2) clinging to a one-goal lead, Anton Khudobin gave up the tying and go-ahead goals 46 seconds apart.Still, first-year coach Jim Montgomery liked what he saw throughout.“I see growth tonight. This is the first time where we’ve had a setback where we competed for 60 minutes. For me, this is the first time where we lost where I’m excited about where we’re going,” he said.Though he’s appeared in only seven of the Stars’ 12 road contests this season, Alexander Radulov is tied with Jamie Benn for the team lead with eight points. The Russian winger recorded his second consecutive two-assist game on Saturday and has five helpers in a three-game streak.Radulov, who missed six games at the start of November due to a lower-body injury, registered eight points (three goals, five assists) in last season’s three-game series with Edmonton.
  9. welcomed Alex Ovechkin and the reigning NHL champion Washington Capitals to the Oval Office on Monday to congratulate them for winning the Stanley Cup in June.Trump said it was an honor to host the team because he is a hockey fan and a Capitals fan. The president called the Capitals “winners” and said there is “an awfully good chance” they will repeat this season.“You brought the Stanley Cup home New York Rangers Hats Authentic ,” Trump said. “Thousands of adoring fans greeted you. They were all over the place. And I have a feeling you’re going to be doing it again. You’re champions. You have a champion’s heart.”Players, coaches and staff members took a private 45-minute tour of the White House and met with Trump in what was a last chance to be around hockey’s sacred trophy as defending champions.“It’s a good reminder of the special things that our group did,” coach Todd Reirden said after practice earlier Monday. “That will kind of put a wrap on it and the final chapter of that moving forward into finishing up the regular season here and moving some of that success into playoffs this year.”Two players on the current roster, Canadians Braden Holtby and Brett Connolly, and Devante Smith-Pelly, who is in the minors, did not visit the White House. Smith-Pelly in June cited Trump’s rhetoric, and Holtby last week said he had to stay true to his values and respectfully decline. In the days since the team scheduled its visit, Holtby and his teammates explained their stances on going or declining while also shifting the focus back to the ice where the Capitals are trying to repeat as champions like the rival Pittsburgh Penguins did.“The more important thing is we’re just gearing up for a playoff run Custom New York Rangers Jerseys , and (different decisions on going or not going are) not going to hurt team unity,” Holtby said Friday. “I hope they have a good experience there and then we can get back to hockey.”The rest of the team was in attendance, along with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani and counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway, who wore a Capitals Stanley Cup champions hat. Trump called daughter Ivanka a friend and fan of Ovechkin’s, compared him to Babe Ruth and also singled out owner Ted Leonsis and American defenseman John Carlson during his remarks.Trump called Ovechkin a “very special athlete, a great player.”“It’s huge honor for us to be here and meet you personally,” said Ovechkin, the Capitals’ Russian-born captain and playoff MVP. “We’re going to try to (win) again. We have same team www.officialsenators.com , experienced team, very good group of guys and we’re going to try to do it again.”The visit comes a day after Attorney General William Barr released a summary of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report that found no evidence Trump’s campaign “conspired or coordinated” with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election but reached no conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice. Trump did not take questions from reporters.Several Capitals players said going to the White House wasn’t about politics. American Brooks Orpik, who went in 2009 with the Penguins to visit then-President Barack Obama, said the decision to go is “not an endorsement of whoever’s in the office.”The Capitals presented Trump with a red No. 45 jersey and a gold, engraved stick. Trump took individual pictures with players and staff and gave them pens and M&Ms before they left.Leonsis called visiting the Oval Office a “true thrill for all of the players and the organization.”Carlson said: “It’s an honor to be here. I think all of us looked very much forward to it.”The Capitals’ White House visit came nine-plus months after their first title in franchise history and with six games left in the regular season before the playoffs begin. Washington is in first place and again is a top contender.“I think you’re going to be successful,” Trump said. “Very proud of you guys. Good luck. We’re going to be watching.” DENVER (AP) — For a brief moment, the Minnesota Wild lost track of the super speedy Nathan MacKinnon. That’s all it took. MacKinnon had a tap-in goal off a nifty pass from Mikko Rantanen to give Colorado the lead, Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 shots and the Avalanche beat the Wild 4-1 on Thursday night in the opener for both teams.“His vision is awesome,” MacKinnon said of his linemate. “I just drove the net and Mikko made a great play.”Minnesota goaltender Devan Dubnyk didn’t have much of a chance on MacKinnon’s second-period goal that gave Colorado a 2-1 advantage. Rantanen skated down the left side and sent a pass through a sea of sticks to MacKinnon Ottawa Senators T-Shirts Authentic , who tapped it in before Dubnyk had a chance to fully turn his head.“He was in a good place and he made a good play,” Dubnky said.Wild coach Bruce Boudreau offered another explanation.“It’s MacKinnon. He’s going to get a lot of goals like that,” Boudreau said.MacKinnon picked up right where he left off from last season, when he tallied 39 goals and 58 assists on his way to finishing second in the Hart Trophy vote. He led the team in shots Thursday with eight. Carl Soderberg scored, while Rantanen and J.T. Compher added empty-net goals for the Avalanche, who moved to 15-5-3 in home openers since moving to town from Quebec.Varlamov returned to net after missing the playoffs last season with a knee injury he suffered late in the regular season. He made his eighth opening-night start in a burgundy-and-blue sweater, surpassing Patrick Roy for the most by an Avalanche goaltender. This also was Varlamov’s 400th career NHL game.“He’s grown so much as a goalie,” MacKinnon said. “His mindset is he can play a low-shot game and stay sharp, and he was great.”Colorado thought it had a two-goal lead when Colin Wilson scored 1:36 into the third after knocking in a puck out of the air. The goal was reviewed and disallowed after it was determined Wilson’s left glove batted the puck in.No matter Ottawa Senators Hoodies Authentic , Varlamov protected things with save after save. None bigger than stopping an Eric Staal wrist shot with his right shoulder on a 2-on-1 with just under 5 minutes remaining.Rantanen added an empty-net goal with 1:53 remaining and Compher another in the waning seconds to seal the victory.Colorado outshot the Wild 40-21. Zach Parise gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead on a backhand pass from Mikko Koivu early in the first period. Parise missed the opening 39 games a season ago due to a back ailment that required surgery. After steadily working his way back into form, Parise suffered a broken sternum in the playoffs.Minnesota is coming off a season in which it posted 101 points before losing to Winnipeg in the first round of the playoffs.“There was some sloppiness that’s not going to be seen in game 20,” Boudreau said. “Pucks bouncing over the sticks and over-skating the puck and things of that nature. … I think they did know how quick the pace was going to be, faster than the preseason, but took us a while to get up to it.”As for the Avalanche, general manager Joe Sakic has modest goals this season after his team returned to the postseason for the first time since 2013-14. Their average age this season is 26.3. They ended last season at 25.8.“Our goal is to make the playoffs, but the most important thing for us is to see the growth of this group,” Sakic said. “We’re excited to see who makes that next jump.”NOTES: Wild F Marcus Foligno was tripped by D Tyson Barrie late in the second period. WASHINGTON (AP) — Boston Bruins players could feel themselves making progress in recent games against the Washington Capitals even as the losses piled up.All it took was finishing one play, a commitment to team defense and a handful of timely saves by Tuukka Rask for the Bruins to end their 14-game skid against the defending Stanley Cup champions with a 1-0 victory Sunday. Boston beat Washington for the first time since March 29 Josh Rosen Jersey Limited , 2014, and its 14 consecutive victories against Arizona are now the longest active winning streak against one opponent in the NHL.“We’ve had some tight games,” said Rask, who made 24 saves for just his second career victory in 19 appearances against Washington. “It’s one of those things that just happens in sports where you get into these streaks of either winning or losing and at some point they’re going to snap.”Thanks to David Krejci’s goal, the Bruins snapped their three-game skid and handed the Capitals their eighth loss in nine games.Outscored 45-21 during their 14-game run of futility, the Bruins dominated the Capitals in almost all facets of the game and would have blown them out if not for the play of goaltender Braden Holtby, who made 37 saves. Happy for him, I think the guys in the room are as well and hopefully he keeps building on it.”Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo didn’t believe there was necessarily a theme or specific problem that led to such a lopsided stretch against Washington and thought his team was getting closer to breaking through. Afterward, captain Zdeno Chara said the Bruins “finally” got the win against Washington. In many ways, the Capitals had themselves to blame.Fed up by mental mistakes, Capitals coach Todd Reirden used ice time as a weapon to punish players. He benched Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitrij Jaskin for much of the first period after each took a penalty and Andre Burakovsky for the first few minutes of the second for a defensive-zone turnover that almost led to a goal.Washington leads the league with 191 minor penalties.“I think as you get past the All-Star break and you start making a push toward the playoffs, that’s an area we have to get better in, as we’ve taken far too many minor penalties with our sticks,” Reirden said. “We have to be more disciplined if we’re going to have success moving forward from here Julio Jones Jersey Limited , and I thought the last 30 games is a good time to implement that.”Alex Ovechkin returned to the lineup after being forced to sit out Friday against Calgary for skipping All-Star Weekend. The top-line center had missed 16 games.”Had to shake off a little bit of rust early, but felt better and better as the game went on and got more comfortable,” Scheifele said. The Blues went ahead to stay when Brayden Schenn got the puck in the corner and passed it out to Tarasenko in the circle, and he fired a high shot past Hellebuyck’s blocker side at 4:18. 12. swooping in on him and his team’s one-goal lead very much in doubt http://www.officialsharks.com/authentic-adidas-logan-couture-jersey , Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray did something that’s kind of tough when Edmonton’s Connor McDavid has the puck dangling on his stick and the game in the balance.Murray waited. He figures he didn’t really have a choice.“He’s got 100 different moves in his arsenal,” Murray said. This time, though, McDavid could have used 101. Murray made an acrobatic stop with his glove hand on McDavid’s penalty shot late in the second period to keep Pittsburgh in front and the Penguins beat the reeling Oilers 3-1 on Wednesday night.McDavid earned the chance after getting pulled down by Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel on a breakaway. McDavid walked in on Murray slowly from the left before making his way across the crease. The delayed wrist shot from the player Murray called “the best in the world” ended up not in the net but in Murray’s awaiting glove.“I think maybe he knew I was going to do it,” McDavid said. “So, got to find something new.”The stop was the flashiest of Murray’s 38 saves, and the one most critical to helping the Pittsburgh win consecutive games for just the second time in five weeks as it tries to stay in the middle of the crowded Eastern Conference playoff chase.“That’s a big turning point,” Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. “If that goes in late in the period like that, it’s a big shift in momentum.”Instead, the Penguins remained unbeaten (6-0) against the Oilers when both Crosby and McDavid are on the ice. Bryan Rust, Teddy Blueger and Jared McCann all scored as Pittsburgh picked up two vital points despite playing without suspended center Evgeni Malkin, forced to sit while serving a one-game suspension for an illegal high stick. Crosby finished with one assist and spent large portions of the night going head to head with the 22-year-old McDavid.“It’s a great challenge,” the 31-year-old Crosby said. “He’s pretty tough to defend. A lot of times you can be in good spots and good positionally but with his speed if you’re even you’re probably in trouble.”McDavid picked up an assist on Leon Draisaitl’s first-period goal but was otherwise held in check. Though Pittsburgh rode a career-high 50 saves from Murray in a one-sided road victory in Philadelphia on Monday, it also continued a pattern of one step forward, one step back.Defenseman Olli Maatta went down in the first period with an upper-body injury that will sideline him indefinitely and the NHL ordered Malkin to sit out as penance after Malkin flung his stick wildly at Philadelphia’s Michael Raffl late in the third period, forcing Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan to get creative in an effort keep his team’s fragile surge going. He moved Nick Bjugstad to center the second line and reshuffled the defensive pairings, including giving Chad Ruhwedel his first appearance since Nov. 19.It led to a bit of a sluggish start, and McDavid wasted little time taking advantage as the Penguins tried to find their footing. He got a pass in front of the Pittsburgh bench from Oscar Klefbom to spark a 2-on-1 and slid a pass over to Draisaitl that beat Murray 4:45 into the game for his 33rd of the season.Rust gave the Penguins a needed spark early in the second period when he put together a dazzling short-handed shift with Matt Cullen that ended with Rust creeping out from behind the Edmonton net and stuffing a puck past Koskinen at 2:35.Blueger put Pittsburgh in front at 6:10 when Kris Letang banked a pass off the side of the Edmonton net that landed on the rookie’s stick. If for nothing else, do it for him.”Martinez tipped Jake Muzzin’s pass past goalie Petr Mrazek to help the Kings end a two-game skid. Kyle Clifford added an empty-net goal at 19:07 of the third period. It was the first win of the season for Quick, who missed 18 games because of two different lower-body injuries. Quick became the 30th goalie in NHL history with 50 shutouts and he leads all American-born goaltenders in that category.Quick’s excellence was on display when Los Angeles had to kill off 1:30 of 5-on-3 play in the third period, as he made saves on shots by Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho.Quick also got help from a penalty kill that had allowed 13 power-play goals in the previous 10 games.“The PK unit did a great job tonight, especially on the 5-on-3,” said Quick, who tied Chris Osgood for 29th place in career shutouts. “It takes a lot of courage blocking shots like those guys were doing. We got some clears on the 5-on-3, which was huge because it releases the pressure a little bit.”Mrazek made 33 saves for the Hurricanes, who earned at least one point in five of their previous six games. It was the first start for Mrazek since Nov. 2 because of a lower-body injury.“He kept us in there, made some big saves,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “The two goalies were kind of going back and forth. We needed someone to make a play, put it in the net, and we’re not getting that right now.”Mrazek did his best to give Carolina a chance until the Kings got a late offensive zone faceoff. Anze Kopitar won the draw against Lucas Wallmark, and Muzzin was able to get the puck to Martinez for his second goal of the season.Mrazek turned aside a one-timer by Jeff Carter during an early power play and denied Tyler Toffoli on a breakaway midway through the first period. The Kings continued to pile on the pressure in the second without finding a way to beat Mrazek. The Hurricanes had to kill three penalties during the period, with Mrazek able to save a dangerous tipped shot by Dustin Brown.Even with Mrazek making those saves, the Hurricanes could not capitalize on their own chances against Quick. Wallmark had a look at an open net in the final 10 seconds of the first period but put his shot low into Quick’s pads as he scrambled back into position, and Quick was able to smother a backhand by Brock McGinn in the third just more than a minute before Martinez finally scored.“End of the day Youth Colin Miller Jersey , unfortunately, we took a breath at the end and it cost us,” Brind’Amour said. “We’ve got to learn. We’re a young group, and young guys making those mistakes, I’ve got to do a better job on just keep hammering home these points because we can’t keep doing this.”NOTES: Kings C Adrian Kempe did not play because of an upper-body injury and is day to day. NEW YORK (AP) Of all the clubs that made deals before the NHL’s trade deadline, a surprise team took perhaps the biggest gamble. The expansion Vegas Golden Knights. They rolled the dice by trading three high draft picks for Red Wings left wing Tomas Tatar.Vegas has set records for wins and points by a first-year team and is tied with Nashville atop the Western Conference at 87 points. Because of that, the Golden Knights were unexpected buyers at Monday’s deadline. General manager George McPhee said the move made sense because the picks are spread out over four drafts and Tatar is under team control through the 2020-21 season. One high-profile player who didn’t get dealt was Ottawa Senators star Erik Karlsson. The defenseman, who can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2018-19 season, said he hopes to sign a new deal to stay in Ottawa. Talks on an extension can begin July 1.”I’ve been here for a long time,” he said before Ottawa’s game at Washington on Tuesday night. ”I’ve made Ottawa my home and it’s always going to be my home.”In all, NHL teams made 18 trades involving 37 players before the deadline on Monday afternoon.Contending teams such as Tampa Bay, Nashville and Boston all gave up first-round draft picks for a chance to upgrade and make a run at the Stanley Cup.The Bruins made the first big move on Sunday when they acquired forward Rick Nash from the New York Rangers. Nash could be counted on for immediate offensive help after the team announced Tuesday that top center and leading goal-scorer Patrice Bergeron is out a minimum of two weeks with a broken right foot. The Lightning, the Bruins’ rival in the Atlantic Division, also made a major deal with the rebuilding Rangers. Tampa Bay acquired defenseman Ryan McDonagh and forward J.T. Miller for Vladimir Namestnikov, two prospects and two high draft picks. McDonagh and Miller will join former New York teammates Anton Stralman, Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi with Tampa Bay.The Rangers will now focus on their rebuild. They have three first-round picks, two second-round picks, two third-round picks, a fourth Calvin De Haan Jersey Womens , a fifth and a sixth for a total of 10 picks in the June draft. In the Western Conference, the Predators, trying to return to the Stanley Cup Final, acquired Ryan Hartman from the Central Division-rival Blackhawks for a prospect and two draft picks. The price was considered steep for Hartman, who had eight goals and 25 points and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.Hartman paid immediate dividends, though, scoring the winning goal with a minute left Tuesday night in a 6-5 victory over second-place Winnipeg.”I’m going to a team that has a real chance this year,” Hartman said Monday. ”They made it all the way to the finals last year and made a really good run. I’m just excited to get down there and to get playing.”Winnipeg, four points behind the Predators, also made a deal with a division rival when the Jets acquired forward Paul Stastny from the St. Louis Blues. The current Jets have never won a playoff game, but have a deep and talented roster capable of making a serious playoff run this spring.”When I first caught wind of that it was a possibility, even just the possibility was really exciting,” Jets forward Blake Wheeler said after the deal was announced.”I think what he brings to our team is something that will be really helpful for us, plug a number of holes.”The move was surprising for St. Louis, which despite entering the deadline on a six-game losing streak, began Tuesday only one point out of a playoff spot.Among the contending teams that were quiet on Monday were the surging Philadelphia Flyers. They added goalie Petr Mrazek last week in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings. The Flyers, who had a 10-game losing streak (0-5-5) earlier this season, are one point behind first-place Washington in the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers are 10-0-1 since the Eagles won the Super Bowl in an upset over the New England Patriots.”You’ve got a chemistry in your room, so to make a deal, it’s got to be the right player, it’s got to be the right price Womens Deryk Engelland Jersey , and it’s got to be a clear upgrade,” Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said Monday. ”Otherwise you’re affecting the chemistry in your room. So for a number of reasons, we had some conversations, but nothing made sense for us.”The two-time defending champion Penguins bolstered their forward group by acquiring center Derick Brassard in a three-team deal last week. However, the Penguins will now have to get by without starting goalie Matt Murray, who is out with a concussion.THEY SAID IT”Every year it seems the last year a couple teams traded first-round picks and maybe they didn’t win doing that and (you think), `No one’s going to do that again.’ Well, they did. 16. WINNIPEG Authentic Julio Jones Jersey , Manitoba — Jets had the NHL’s goal-scoring leader on its roster, Teemu Selanne was tearing things up as a rookie. The Finnish Flash went back and forth with Buffalo’s Alexander Mogilny during the season and they both ended up with 76 goals during the 1992-93 campaign. Selanne set a mark that will likely never be topped for first-year players. In fact, he’s the only player in NHL history to record a hat-trick in three different countries in the same season. He’ll be looking to increase his lead in the race for the Rocket Richard trophy when the Jets host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night at Bell MTS Place.Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin said he and his teammates are well aware of what happened in St. Louis on the weekend.“(Laine) doesn’t need a lot of room to get his shot off. And it’s so heavy, it’s tough for goalies to react to. He’s a dynamic player and he’s also got really good hands and can create space for himself,” he told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.The visitors have hardly been acting like perennial Stanley Cup contenders and currently sit in sixth places in the Metropolitan Division Julio Jones Jersey Limited , but they got a boost last week when captain Sidney Crosby returned to the line-up after missing a troika of games with an upper-body injury. They’re going to do things differently based on the style of player but the end result is they had a lot of offensive zone time,” he said in a scrum after practice on Monday.“At times when Patty weighed in, he’s a physical presence down there. I’m not talking about dropping guys or knocking guys down, I’m talking about controlling the puck and holding people off. Not much attention was paid to the acquisition of Anthony Duclair. But Duclair is making people stand up and take notice on the ice in his first season in Columbus. Just trying to get back to the routine.”“It’s just a matter of getting more games to shake off the rust” he said.“I think the more you play and the more you get into games Matt Ryan Jersey Limited , the little details are what make a big difference,” Crawford said. “The more games I play it’s going to feel better. I’ve just got to work hard and make sure I’m in the right spot to give myself the best chance to make saves.”One of Crawford’s best stops against Arizona came on a third-period breakaway.“I thought he was unreal,” Toews said. “Stopped a couple breakaways, though we just kept testing him with those tough ones. It’s almost to be expected. He comes in, so confident and relaxed and just plays hockey.”Defenseman Brandon Davidson is expected to make his regular-season Blackhawks debut in the third defensive pairing with Jan Rutta. 17. Mike Sullivan would love to point to a coaching tactic or some semblance of strategy that explains why the Pittsburgh Penguins are so good in overtime.Only Sullivan can’t. He’s been coaching long enough to know that when there are six just men on the ice and his team happens to have one of the most gifted offensive groups in the NHL Johnny Gaudreau Jersey Kids , it’s best to just get out of the way.”For the most part, it’s really just about great players making great plays and when our guys have the puck, they’re dynamic,” Sullivan said. The latest proof came midway through the extra period on Monday, when Phil Kessel drew Calgary’s Jon Gillies away from the net and slipped a cross-ice pass to Justin Schultz , who buried it to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory. Schultz’s fourth goal of the season helped the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions improve to 10-1 at home in overtime this season.”We’ve got the players that are so good out there with that much ice, so we enjoy it,” Schultz said. ”We don’t like to go to (overtime) that much, but it’s nice to know that we can get wins.”Evgeni Malkin scored his 37th goal for the Penguins and added an assist. Kris Letang and Chad Ruhwedel also scored for Pittsburgh. Jarry finished with 35 saves as the Penguins pulled within one point of Washington for first in the crowded Metropolitan Division. Tristan Jarry finished with 35 saves, including a breakaway stop on Calgary star Johnny Gaudreau early in overtime.”They got some physical guys, they have a couple bigger guys,” Jarry said. ”We knew it would be a tough game. I was trying to hold my ground as much as I could.”Mark Giordano, Mikael Backlund and Troy Brouwer scored for the Flames Los Angeles Kings Hats Womens , who outplayed the Penguins for long stretches before dropping their fourth straight. Gillies stopped 28 shots but had no chance when Kessel slid a cross-ice pass to a wide-open Schultz.”We go into overtime and it can be anybody’s game,” Calgary coach Glen Gulutzan said. ”We had a 2-on-0 there that could’ve ended it, but when you’ve got that many dangerous guys on the ice with that much room, somebody’s going to end it. It just happened to be them on that next chance.”The Penguins had dropped five straight to the Flames, including a 2-1 overtime loss in Calgary in November back when they played very much like a team dealing with a Stanley Cup hangover. Four months later, Pittsburgh is again looking like a threat to make a deep playoff run and wasted little time sprinting to a 2-0 lead.Ruhwedel collected his first goal since Dec. 18 on a knuckler from the point 2:10 into the game, and Malkin doubled Pittsburgh’s advantage 55 seconds later when teammate Bryan Rust forced a turnover by Gillies behind the Calgary net. Malkin collected the puck and flipped it across the goal line before Gillies could scramble back into position. The Flames, in the middle of their own fight to stay in the Western Conference playoff mix, tied it before the end of the first. Giordano finished off extended pressure with his 11th of the season and Backlund beautifully deked by Letang before beating Jarry with a backhand for his 13th.Letang put the Penguins back in front with a wrist shot off the rush from the right circle that ripped over Gillies’ right shoulder with 2:59 left in the second. Draisaitl, who is tied for ninth with 52 points, has seven goals in the past seven games.Jesse Puljujarvi and Kyle Brodziak also scored. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Caleb Jones each had two assists. It was just Edmonton’s second win in nine games but both have come during a four-game road trip, which concludes on Tuesday in San Jose.“It was a huge win. We are now on a good road trip and can turn it into a great one,” coach Ken Hitchcock said. “We went into the red zone and attacked more. We scored three goals because of the loose garbage we were able to pick up.”John Gibson made 20 saves for the Ducks, who are 0-2-2 during a six-game homestand — their longest of the season.“When you’re in a funk and in frustration mode, it’s the hardest thing in the world when you work and don’t get results and they score. That’s how it felt tonight,” captain Ryan Getzlaf said. The Oilers opened the scoring at 7:37 of the first period when McDavid finally was able to get the puck under Gibson’s blocker on his third attempt from in front for his 24th goal of the season. A no-look backhand from the slot by Puljujarvi at 16:05 and a short-handed goal by Brodziak with 11 seconds remaining marked the first time since Jan. 21, 2017, at Calgary that the Oilers have led by three or more on the road at the end of 20 minutes. It was the third time this season Anaheim had allowed three goals in the first period but it was the first time it trailed by three or more in the period since Feb. 3 last season at Montreal.Draisaitl scored his 23rd at 7:25 of the second when he corralled a shot by Jones that was blocked by Anaheim’s Ondrej Kase and fired a wrist shot past Gibson to make it 4-0.NOTES: Anaheim D Cam Fowler played in his first game since missing 23 after taking a puck to the face Nov. 12 against Nashville. He joined Bobby Clarke, Bob Gainey, Bob Pulford and Doug Wilson.UP NEXTOilers: Play at San Jose on Tuesday.Ducks: Host Ottawa on Wednesday. It wasn’t the 15-hour flight to China for training camp that had general manager Brad Treliving’s head spinning. It was the pace of Bill Peters’ first practice as coach of the Calgary Flames.“I was tired watching it,” Treliving said.Peters has lost no time in helping the Flames improve and reach first place in the Pacific Division during his first season. In fact, the six teams that hired a new coach over the summer are all doing well — certainly when compared to the five that have dumped coaches already the season. Those clubs are a combined 47-60-11 since making those moves.Peters and Todd Reirden, who took over the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals from Barry Trotz, will coach in the All-Star Game on Jan. 26 with their teams leading their respective divisions at the halfway mark.Jim Montgomery’s Dallas Stars are third in the Central Division and Barry Trotz’s New York Islanders a point out of a playoff spot with extra games to play, while the New York Rangers are overachieving under David Quinn and the Carolina Hurricanes are taking steps forward after Rod Brind’Amour replaced Peters. For Reirden and Brind’Amour, the challenge was moving up from a role as a longtime assistant. Capitals and Hurricanes players say the transitions have been smooth because each coach hasn’t altered his approach.“(Reirden is) a completely different person, different personality, different style and I think he’s stuck to who he is,” Capitals defenseman John Carlson said. “What’s helped him is just staying true to what we all expect out of him.”With almost the same roster back, Washington was expected to make the playoffs and take a good shot at repeating. Expectations were fuzzier for the Flames, Islanders and Stars.Calgary had alternated making and missing the playoffs under coaches Bob Hartley and Glen Gulutzan before Peters took over. The Flames’ 58 points have them tied atop the Western Conference and trailing only the powerhouse Tampa Bay Lightning in the overall NHL standings, a big testament to Peters’ puck-hounding style and straightforward communication.“He’s a great coach,” star winger Johnny Gaudreau said. “He knows how to win. It doesn’t matter if you’re top line, bottom line Authentic Erik Karlsson Jersey Kids , if you’re not playing well you’re not going to be on the ice. He’s not going put you over the bench there. He expects a lot out of his players and it’s been great playing for him this year.”Trotz has had a similar impact with the Islanders, bringing much-needed structure to a team that missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons and lost point-a-game center John Tavares to Toronto in free agency. Veteran GM Lou Lamoriello said with any coaching change three or four players get better and three or four get worse; he thinks Trotz has gotten the most out of a team far different than what he had in Washington.“He’s extremely detailed, very consistent in his approach as far as planning, execution, system and delivery,” Lamoriello said of Trotz. “He has an outstanding delivery to the players as far as no highs, no lows and holds them accountable to what is being asked of them.”In Dallas, top-line center Tyler Seguin said Montgomery has done a good job of giving players rest, sometimes opting for video work instead of practice. Despite an uproar over pointed comments made by CEO Jim Lites about the performance of Seguin and captain Jamie Benn, the Stars hold a wild-card spot in Montgomery’s first NHL season after five years at the University of Denver.Quinn spent five seasons at Boston University before GM Jeff Gorton hired him to coach the Rangers, and the returns on that decision are already positive. His job isn’t to get New York into the playoffs right away but rather instill good habits. He is also occasionally scratching players young and old to set a standard for quality of play.“He’s trying to set a tone of accountability here,” Gorton said. “I think he’s been consistent to who he is, and his philosophy is if guys aren’t doing the job, then I’ve got to put guys in that are going to do it.”Consistency and familiarity have helped Brind’Amour with the Hurricanes, who lack scoring punch and have a league-worst nine-year playoff drought. The players respect his legendary work ethic.“When he says it, you know he’s done it and it makes you want to do it, too,” defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk said. “When he talks, he commands the room and I think he’s a guy you really like to play for.”JOHNNY HOCKEYNo player in the NHL is hotter right now than Gaudreau Jean-Gabriel Pageau Jersey , who’s earning every bit of his “Johnny Hockey” nickname. His 16 goals and 35 points in 18 games are the most in the league since Dec. 1 and inside the organization show the progression of the 25-year-old into an all-around superstar.“There’s a maturity to his game,” Treliving said. “He’s had a real defensive consciousness this year. Not that he hadn’t in the past, but when he doesn’t have (the puck), he’s tracking to get it back.”TIGHT METROThe top four teams in the Metropolitan Division — the Capitals, Penguins, Blue Jackets and Islanders — were separated by just six points. That could mean a Trotz vs. Reirden showdown in the first round, Washington-Pittsburgh again or any combination of first-round matchups among teams that look evenly matched.“It’s a challenge and it forces you to be on your game all the time,” Reirden said.BANGED-UP PREDATORSNashville has dealt with major injuries to several key players. Defenseman P.K. Subban missed 19 games before Christmas, winger Viktor Arvidsson missed 24 of 25 and winger Filip Forsberg missed 17 in a row before returning Monday. Nashville endured a six-game losing streak in December but has somehow thrived amid injuries in the stacked Central Division.“There’s no sense crying about it,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “We’ve got to win hockey games.”GAME OF THE WEEKThe Boston Bruins visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on “Hockey Night in Canada” Saturday in what could be an Atlantic Division first-round playoff preview.LEADERS (through Tuesday)Goals: Alex Ovechkin (Washington), 30; Assists: Nikita Kucherov (Tampa Bay), 50; Points: Kucherov, 71; Ice time: Drew Doughty (Los Angeles), 26:38; Wins: Marc-Andre Fleury (Vegas), 25; Goals-against average: Robin Lehner (Islanders), 2.18; Save percentage: Jack Campbell (Los Angeles), .930.

I don’t think anyone’s happy, for sure. But we just have to make sure we’re not getting overly frustrated. Kind of use it as motivation to get back out there and have our best game in a while.”Kuemper, who was starting in place of Antti Raanta (lower body injury) made 27 saves. He has allowed at least four goals in each of his last three starts. The Coyotes had a four-minute power play late in the second period but were unable to convert.“It looked like they were a little tense on that,” Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. “You get one there maybe you get some juice. Didn’t like that four minute. Didn’t see a lot of leading going on out there. It was discouraging for us.”Pittsburgh’s Casey DeSmith made 39 saves.Washington is the third stop in a four-game Arizona road trip. The Capitals had won two straight before Friday’s 2-1 loss to the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets.Sergei Bobrovsky outdueled Braden Holtby in a game in which all three goals came on power plays. He also lost his stick while trying to defend against Anthony Duclair Womens Shane Doan Jersey , who scored the go-ahead goal on Friday. The Capitals have the NHL’s second-ranked power play (32.7 percent), but they’ll be facing a Coyotes penalty kill that leads the league with nine short-handed goals.“They’re able to really generate some offense and keep teams on their heels,” Capitals coach Todd Reirden said, “And it’s just important to understand that we have five guys on the ice, they have four, but we still need to outwork them and we still need to make sure we’re in proper position to protect our teammates and not give up any free offense on that.”Arizona boasts the NHL’s top penalty kill (91.5 percent).Carlson missed Friday’s game with a lower body injury. He practiced Saturday and could return against Arizona. Carlson is the NHL’s fourth leading scorer among defensemen with five goals and 18 points.Forward Evgeny Kuznetsov, who is on a six-game point streak, was excused from practice Saturday but is expected to play Sunday.Arizona defenseman Alex Goligoski missed Saturday night’s game due to a lower body injury.Holtby is 4-1 with a 2.80 GAA and .908 save percentage against the Coyotes. BOSTON (AP) — Ryan Donato knew he couldn’t afford to let a golden opportunity to get himself back into the fold pass him by.Donato, recalled Wednesday after a demotion to Providence of the AHL, grabbed the puck and charged toward the net on the Boston Bruins‘ fourth attempt in a shootout Thursday night. The 22-year-old left wing deked right and tucked the puck past New York Islanders goalie Robin Lehner to give Boston a 2-1 win.Donato hopes that will be enough to earn himself another extended look with the big club.“It was big. You want to make sure you have an immediate impact on the game, show the coaches and staff that you developed in your time (at Providence) Anders Bjork Jersey ,” Donato said. “I tried to do that to the best of my abilities, and hopefully I proved that to them today.”Donato was sent to Providence on Nov. 1 after a disappointing start to his second NHL season, scoring just one goal in 11 games. The former Harvard standout had five goals and four assists in 12 games a season ago.“We know he can score, so he was going to be in the rotation. We just weren’t sure where,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Clearly Tuukka (Rask) obviously gave him that chance to go, and he took advantage of it.”Rask stymied the Islanders with 28 saves and Brad Marchand scored in regulation for the Bruins, who ended up in their first shootout this season.Anders Lee had a goal and Lehner made 35 saves for the Islanders, who lost their second straight game.Lehner allowed just one goal in regulation after giving up three or more in four consecutive starts.“Tuukka had a great game and kept us out of it, but so did Lehnny,” Lee said. “He played an incredible game. 20. BUFFALO Bo Horvat Jersey , N.Y. (AP) Sabres they have nothing to play for.For a team all but mathematically out of playoff contention, the Sabres continued making a dent in in the Eastern Conference playoff race with a 5-3 win against their cross-border and Atlantic Division rival Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.”It’s an easy game to get prepared for,” said Pominville, one of four Sabres to score a goal and assist. ”You know it’s going to be a great atmosphere in our building with the fans they get.”The Sabres silenced the large contingent of ”Go, Leafs, Go!”-chanting fans by building a 2-0 lead within the first four minutes. And after the Maple Leafs tied the game, Buffalo responded by scoring three times and sealed the victory on Johan Larsson’s goal midway through the third period.Ryan O’Reilly, Sam Reinhart and Zemgus Girgensons also scored for Buffalo, while Chad Johnson stopped 38 shots in extending the Maple Leafs’ skid to 0-2-2.Though the Sabres remain at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings Youth Brandon Sutter Jersey , they improved to 7-5-2 in their last 14 games. It’s a three-week stretch during which Buffalo has defeated each of the division’s three top teams, including Boston twice.Pominville also showed he hasn’t lost his touch against Toronto.Re-acquired by the Sabres in a trade last summer after a four-plus-season stint in Minnesota, Pominville now has 19 goals and 50 points in 51 career games with Buffalo against Toronto.”Wow,” the former Sabres captain said. ”I should play them more often.”Leo Komarov had two goals and Mitch Marner also scored for Toronto.Frederik Andersen stopped 19 shots in allowing five goals for the second consecutive outing after being yanked midway through a 5-2 loss to Washington in an outdoor game played at the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday. The only consolation for Andersen this time was he couldn’t be faulted on Buffalo’s first four goals, all of which were set up by fortunate bounces. The Sabres led 2-0 after Reinhart and Pominville deflected in shots from the right point by Rasmus Ristolainen. Girgensons put Buffalo up 3-2 when Reinhart’s shot from a bad angle banked in off his skate. The Sabres received yet another break in going up 4-2 when Toronto defenseman Ron Hainsey’s clearing attempt struck referee Kendrick Nicholson’s skate. The puck caromed directly to O’Reilly, who scored from the right circle.”That was pretty crazy. I think it seemed like everything just hit something and found a way into the net,” Andersen said. ”In the big picture, they earned their bounces.”Leafs coach Mike Babcock couldn’t fault Andersen, though he took issue with the NHL for allowing Larsson’s goal to stand up following a video review for goaltender interference. After stopping Pominville’s one-timer from the left circle Brendan Leipsic Jersey Kids , Andersen was knocked off balance from behind by Larsson, who was skating through the crease. Larsson then corralled the rebound and swept it under Andersen.Babcock challenged the call by saying Larsson first collided with Andersen while the two were in the crease.”What they told me is he was interfered with outside the paint, which is not true and that, tonight, was goalie interference no matter what way you look at it,” Babcock said.Toronto has matched its longest skid of the season, which comes after the Leafs enjoyed a 13-2 run.”The bottom line is you’ve got to get it turned around. We can’t continue to lose hockey games,” Babcock said.NOTES: The Sabres continued their home dominance over Toronto, improving to 19-3-1 in their past 23 meetings at Buffalo. … One of the more amusing moments came when television cameras captured an exchange between Ristolainen and Toronto’s Nazem Kadri http://www.canucksshoponline.com/authentic-alex-burmistrov-jersey , after the two were sent to the penalty box for fighting in the second period. Los Angeles hasn’t lost seven in a row since an eight-game skid in January 2008.“Losing in this game is not enjoyable,” Kings coach John Stevens told reporters after a 4-1 loss at the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. “We’re in this business to win, so at the end of the day, results are two points whether you do good things or don’t do good things.”Article continues below ...The Rangers (3-6-1) are also looking for improvement after coach David Quinn said they played their worst game of the season on Thursday night in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, which opened a four-game road trip.New York was outshot 37-19 and produced just one shot on goal in the third period.“We’ve done a good job of skating and competing, but that certainly wasn’t the case tonight,” Quinn said. The Kings should get a boost with the return of right winger Dustin Brown, who broke a finger in the final preseason game and has been sidelined since. The Kings haven’t scored more than two goals in each of their past six losses, and haven’t led since a 3-0 win on Oct. 11 at the Montreal Canadiens.“We’ve just got to bear down offensively, especially in the blue paint, inside the dots,” Stevens said. “Those are the areas, I think, that we can come up with some more pucks if we get a few more pucks to the net. You can’t play perfect. You can’t win 1-0 every night. It’s tough to win that way.”The Kings will likely be up against veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, in his 14th NHL season.Lundqvist has started eight of 10 games this season and owns a 2-5-1 record with a 2.61 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.Lundqvist has struggled at Staples Center in recent years http://www.canucksshoponline.com/authentic-henrik-sedin-jersey , however. He lost all three of his starts in Los Angeles during the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals and the Kings won the series in five games. Tony DeAngelo, another right-shot defenseman, would likely slide into the lineup after serving as a healthy scratch the past six games. The Kings are hoping the next seven games on their home ice will help turn their season around.“We always want to be a good home team, so no better time to go home than right now and get things back on track,” Kings forward Anze Kopitar said.
  21. Todd McLellan figured he was due to win a challenge. He was right Womens Henrik Zetterberg Jersey , and that allowed the Oilers to hold on for a win they nearly gave away.Ryan Strome’s empty-net goal at 19:01 of the third period and a successful coach’s challenge to overturn an apparent goal by Dustin Brown with less than 10 seconds left gave Edmonton a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.Brown tipped in Drew Doughty’s shot to cut it to 4-3 with 18 seconds remaining and appeared to tie it with 9.8 seconds to play when he batted the puck over the line while making contact with goalie Cam Talbot’s pads. The play was ruled no goal on the ice and changed after a video review, but the Oilers challenged for goaltender interference and the goal was waived off.”Not one that we wanted to be challenging,” McLellan said. ”I thought we could have done a better job, obviously, in those last few minutes. But not going to dwell on that a lot. We haven’t won in this building in a long, long time, so we’ll take any type of win that we can get.”Kings coach John Stevens was angry about the reversal, saying Brown never impeded Talbot’s opportunity to make a save.”I think the league is so confused that I’m confused, right? I don’t think they know what it is, so how the hell are we supposed to know what it is, right? There’s a loose puck sitting in the crease and he jams it in the net. You don’t get surprised, you get impressed.”The first time the All-Star game came to San Jose in 1997, hometown favorite Owen Nolan capped the night by calling his shot and pointing to the spot where he completed a hat trick that delighted the Shark Tank.Sharks fans didn’t have as much to cheer for in the return, even though their three All-Stars started the night on the ice together for the Pacific. The Central blitzed the Pacific early for its first win in four years in this format, scoring seven goals on nine shots against John Gibson in the first half of the period in a 10-4 victory.Gibson, who plays for the rival Anaheim Ducks, drew derisive chants from the fans who later called for Vegas’ Marc-Andre Fleury to take over.“Anytime you play it’s a rivalry and the fans take it personally. That’s what makes it fun,” Gibson said. “You’re still at All-Star game and you’re out there with some of the best players in the league. Stuff’s going to happen.”Landeskog had a hat trick and an assist and Roman Josi had three assists and a goal for the Central.Pekka Rinne and Dubnyk combined to stop 23 of 27 shots with Dubnyk providing one of the biggest highlights with a glove save that robbed Connor McDavid on a breakaway. The Metropolitan Division won the second semifinal 7-4 thanks to a tiebreaking goal by Letang with 3:38 to play. OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Matt Duchene and the Ottawa Senators are attempting to put the drama behind them after a viral video of him and some teammates criticizing the club and assistant coach Marty Raymond emerged online Monday.Duchene spoke publicly about the incident for the first time Tuesday night after the Senators beat the New Jersey Devils 7-3 in Ottawa.“I want to take this opportunity to extend my absolute sincere apologies to Marty Raymond. He’s a heck of a person and coach and he did not deserve what we said. I sincerely, sincerely mean that on behalf of myself and my teammates,” Duchene said.“It’s been a tough couple of days for a lot of people and we needed to respond and we did (with a win). We’ve dealt with things and everything in (the room) is good. We’re moving forward and it’s hard for me to even talk about because it makes me emotional and it’s not the person I am, or any of us. We’ve done a heck of a job bouncing back tonight as a whole group and I’ve said it all season and I’m going to keep saying it, we have a heck of a group in here.”Ottawa forward Mark Stone said earlier in the day the latest bit of turmoil in the ongoing saga of the Senators is a “hiccup,” and that the team has already done work to repair the frayed relationship between players and coaches that was laid bare in the video. The video showed seven Senators players during an Uber ride in Phoenix last month insulting the team and Raymond. Stone said Tuesday the matter already was addressed before the five-minute clip surfaced.“It’s disappointing the way the video got released,” he said. “We dealt with this long before this video was released. As a coaching staff, as management, as players it was dealt with internally and the way it should be, and we’re going to move forward and grow from it.“We don’t want negative stuff surrounding our team and this is a hiccup. I think guys have made a great effort to repair relationships. This is only going to make our team stronger going forward.”The video was the latest humiliation for the organization over the past two years: owner Eugene Melnyk threatening to move the team; alleged cyberbullying involving the wife of former star captain Erik Karlsson; and harassment allegations against former assistant general manager Randy Lee.The players in the Uber were Duchene Los Angeles Kings Hats Authentic , Chris Wideman, Chris Tierney, Thomas Chabot, Alex Formenton (since sent down to the juniors), Dylan DeMelo and Colin White. They were discussing the team’s ineffective penalty killing and mocking Raymond in what appears to be a recording from a camera mounted on the dashboard.Uber Canada’s General Manager Rob Khazzam said on his Twitter account that video taken of a private conversation without passenger consent is a “clear violation of our terms of service.” He said such conduct is “totally unacceptable” and merits investigation.None of the players involved discussed the video Tuesday.“As a leader of this team I want to be supporting my teammates,” Stone said. “It’s something I never want anyone to go through with it. As a coaching staff and management and players, we’re trying to form a bond that turns this team into the right direction and this is a hiccup, but I think we’re on the right track of doing that.”Defenseman Mark Borowiecki acknowledged the Senators would have to deal with the “consequences” and “ramifications” of the video.“But we want to keep this in house as much as we can and deal with it appropriately,” he said.In the video, Duchene, one of the Senators’ alternate captains, is heard saying: “Marty Raymond, the only coach in NHL history to have the worst power-play and the worst PK within a calendar year.”Duchene later adds that he hasn’t “paid attention in three weeks” in Raymond’s meetings. The players apologized to Raymond in a statement Monday.Raymond, in his third season with the Senators Custom Los Angeles Kings Jerseys , was responsible for the power play for much of last season and is in charge of the team’s penalty-killing this year. Ottawa’s penalty killing ranks 30th in the league.Senators coach Guy Boucher said the team is trying to move forward and concentrate on Tuesday night’s home game against New Jersey.“I don’t know who makes decisions to put things like that out there, but when you purposely try to hurt another human being, I don’t want to spend too much time on that, and especially probably the best human being I know (Raymond), that’s personal,” Boucher said.During the morning skate Duchene was seen talking and laughing with Raymond as the two held a brief conversation at center ice.The matter has raised concerns about player privacy.“We’re all totally aware that any time someone says to you this is off the record … nothing is off the record in your life. So let’s get that straight,” Toronto coach Mike Babcock said at the Maple Leafs’ morning skate Tuesday. Many Maple Leaf players said it’s imperative for players to be aware of their surroundings when having a private conversation. And defenseman Travis Dermott expressed some sympathy for the Ottawa players.“I mean, tough bounce for them. They’re going to have to deal with that, but it could happen to anyone, really.”Added Vegas Golden Knights winger Ryan Reaves: “I would never expect a cab ride conversation to be made public, but that’s the world we live in right now. Everybody’s a snitch.”
  23. with the most salary cap space going into free agency Carolina Hurricanes Hats Womens , giving the Western Conference champions some chips to put on the table in a bid to get back to the Stanley Cup Final.Vegas had nearly $30 million to spend going into the weekend, according to spotrac.com, trailing only the New York Islanders by about $2 million. The Golden Knights seem set up for major moves if general manager George McPhee wants to bolster the second-year team with free agents.Vegas didn’t appear to have a shot at landing the top prize on the market John Tavares . But the Golden Knights may make a run at some other available veterans to help increase their chances of competing at a championship level again next season.Players such as James van Riemsdyk and Paul Stastny would fit in up front with a team that stunningly exceeded expectations during the franchise’s inaugural season. Mike Green, perhaps the best defenseman available, is another veteran that would mesh well as a puck-moving defenseman for the speedy team. However, McPhee may not want to pay a heavy price with long-term contracts to land any of the top players on the market. He may choose to re-sign his own free agents, sign goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who has one year left on his deal, to a contract extension. He may roll with the talented players on his roster while trying to draft and develop. The Golden Knights have some free agents of their own they’ll want to bring back. James Neal, David Perron and Ryan Reaves are unrestricted free agents with a chance to cash in on their performances last season by re-signing with Vegas or leaving to take advantage of a thin crop of available players.Vegas’ key restricted free agents are: William Karlsson, Colin Miller, Shea Theodore, Tomas Nosek and Will Carrier. Keeping Karlsson, without a doubt, will be a priority. Here’s a look at some other teams positioned to make major moves:NEW YORK ISLANDERSThe Islanders had nearly $32 million in cap space the day before free agency began, giving them more money to spend than any other team in the league. They’ll need a lot of that money to retain Tavares, who is easily the best player potentially available. The 27-year-old star center can command an eight-year deal to stay in New York for perhaps $10 million, or more, per season.NEW YORK RANGERSThe Rangers were $27-plus million under the cap going into the weekend, but had just 13 players under contract. They will have to spend about $10 million next season to retain restricted free agents Vladislav Namestnikov Custom Carolina Hurricanes Jerseys , Kevin Hayes and Ryan Spooner.TORONTO MAPLE LEAFSThe franchise hopes to sign Tavares, who is from the Toronto area, to give it a second star to go along with 20-year-old Auston Matthews. Toronto will have some tough choices to make with some of its own players potentially on the unrestricted free agent market such as van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak, Tomas Plekanec and Leo Komarov. William Nylander, a restricted free agent, will be a priority to keep after consecutive 61-point seasons.VANCOUVER CANUCKSWith twin brothers Henrik and Daniel Sedin retiring after counting $7 million each against the cap last season, the Canucks had nearly $25 million in cap space going into the weekend. They’ll probably have to pay free agents more and offer longer-term contracts than other suitors because they’ve been among the worst teams in the league the last three seasons.— ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) The Washington Capitals have never used more rookies during a single postseason than the half-dozen who helped Alex Ovechkin and Co. reach the Eastern Conference final. They’re contributing in various ways, including with secondary scoring and a freedom from the past playoff failures that became a burden for Capitals veterans.”Man, they gave us a big boost with their energy and enthusiasm,” said Matt Niskanen, a defenseman in his 11th NHL season. ”It’s infectious.”It’s part of a league-wide trend, too: The 50 rookie skaters in these playoffs are the most since teams used 54 in 2005-06. That could be a reflection of teams having greater trust in young players arriving from junior hockey or college, or the need to stock rosters with cheap talent as a greater percentage of the salary cap is devoted to the elite.”The way you build your hockey teams, those kids get a chance to play all season long. They get put in positions where they can succeed,” Vegas Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant said. ”Over the last 10 or 15 years, they’re more prepared.”The Capitals advanced to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in a series beginning Friday night by using five rookies during a clinching 2-1 overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round. One of the fresh faces, Nathan Walker, assisted on a goal.In Washington’s Game 5 win over Pittsburgh Chicago Blackhawks Hoodies Womens , another rookie, right wing Jakub Vrana, was bumped from the third line to the top one and delivered an assist on the tying score before putting the go-ahead goal in the net. And to think: Vrana played a tad under seven minutes in Washington’s opening playoff game, then was a healthy scratch for the second. Played every game since, though.”I got an opportunity and I was ready,” said Vrana, a 22-year-old from the Czech Republic. ”I didn’t get a whole lot of minutes at the beginning, but even if I get eight minutes, I still go out there and do my best and try to make those eight minutes count.”Similarly, defenseman Christian Djoos sat out Washington’s first two games but played in the other 10.Vrana and Djoos were expected to appear in Game 1 at Tampa Bay, perhaps joined by forwards Chandler Stephenson and Travis Boyd, who skated together on the third line at practice Wednesday. Walker and another rookie who faced Pittsburgh, Shane Gersich, are also part of the group that matched the franchise record of six playoff rookies set in 1989-90.”There’s two kinds of things that happen with young guys. They’re naive and just play and have a lot of fun and it doesn’t bother `em. … There’s other ones that get the starry-eyed, saucer-eyed (look) and they have to sort of work through that,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. ”Early in the Columbus series, (Vrana) had a little bit of those saucer eyes. And then he sort of grew out of it.”The Lightning’s trio of rookies combined for 12 playoff points through two rounds: Anthony Cirelli, Yanni Gourde and defenseman Mikhail Sergachev. Cirelli has played a key defensive center role after getting into just 18 regular-season games. There are fewer youngsters in the Western Conference final.Alex Tuch, who turned 22 on Thursday, has four goals and three assists as the sole postseason rookie for the Golden Knights. Their opponent Chicago Blackhawks Hats Womens , Winnipeg, has three rookies, but only one has logged regular playing time – left wing Kyle Connor broke out with two goals and an assist in Game 5 of the second round against Nashville, then had two assists in the Jets’ 5-1 victory over the Predators in Game 7 on Thursday night.Back in 2013-14, his first full season as an NHL coach, Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper used nine rookies in the playoffs, a total no team has eclipsed since. That Lightning club was swept in the first round.”I don’t think we were necessarily prepared for it,” said Tyler Johnson, one of four members of that precocious crop who also has appeared in the playoffs for Tampa Bay this time around. ”We didn’t know what to expect.”That’s the thing about newcomers, of course. They don’t know how they’ll react to being in the faster, more physical, higher-quality, higher-pressure playoffs.Nor do coaches or teammates.”There’s a little bit of the enthusiasm of the youth, something about the young guys. They’ve always got the smile on. Sometimes they’re funny. Sometimes they’re naive,” Trotz said. ”Sometimes they just sort of need a little bit of tightening from their peers or their coach.”—AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno, AP Sports Writer Fred Goodall in Tampa, Florida, and AP freelancer W.G. We fell into a shell.”Calgary opened the scoring 4:46 in when a quick passing sequence was finished off by Monahan in the slot on the power play.Chicago tied it with 6:03 remaining in the period after Travis Hamonic’s holding penalty put the Blackhawks on a two-man power play fpr 1:10 and they took advantage on Toews’ eighth goal. The Blackhawks took their first lead with 27 seconds left in the first as Rutta faked a slap shot to elude the sliding Garnet Hathaway, then put a wrist shot through a crowd and past Rittich high on his blocker side.Saad split the Flames’ defense while being harassed from behind by Mark Giordano and sent a shot that squeaked through Rittich’s pads to make it 3-1 with 6:19 left in the second.Calgary took over after that.NOTES: The Flames got an early five-minute man advantage when Duncan Keith was given a boarding major and game misconduct just over two minutes in, when his hit from behind on Dillon Dube sent the rookie head first into the boards. He wore a hoodie on Thursday night in Philadelphia while experiencing chills from the flu and did not attend Friday’s practice.“He was so cold he was shaking,” Blue Jackets assistant coach Brad Larsen said, according to the team’s website. “It was like full-body tremors.”The Capitals experienced a similar situation to the Blue Jackets’ blown lead against the Flames when they gave up a four-goal advantage in a 6-5 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. Two days later, the Capitals lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in a Stanley Cup Final rematch but ended their brief two-game skid with a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night Jamie Benn Jersey , their first regular-season win in Phoenix since 2006.The Capitals played without wingers T.J. Oshie and Tom Wilson at the same time for the first time this season. Oshie has missed 10 games with an upper body injury and Wilson sustained a concussion on Tuesday night in the game against the Golden Knights.Andre Burakovsky stepped up and scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period for the Capitals.“I think I’ve been playing good,” Burakovsky said, according to The Washington Post. “I’m doing all of the right things, if you really watch the game closely. I’m not drifting away from the game as much as I did maybe two years ago.“Even if I haven’t produced as many points as people expect or I expect from myself, I still think my game has been way better overall than in the past couple of years, so obviously that’s a good sign.”Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin extended his scoring streak to 10 games on an empty-net goal with 2.3 seconds remaining against the Coyotes. Ovechkin nine goals and five assists during the streak, and he’s tied for the NHL lead in goals with 21.“It was good for us to have a really solid third period,” Capitals coach Todd Reirden said. “That cost us the last couple of games and something we addressed and spread out some of the ice time so we could be a little stronger as the third period went on. I thought it was beneficial for us.”Nicklas Backstrom has 34 points in 28 games and John Carlsson ranks third among NHL defensemen with 29 points.
  27. COLUMBUS Custom Arizona Coyotes Jerseys , Ohio (AP) —for the Columbus Blue Jackets.Atkinson scored for the sixth straight game, and the Blue Jackets beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Friday night to remain atop the Metropolitan Division.Josh Anderson had two goals and Markus Hannikainen also scored, helping the Blue Jackets avenge a 4-2 loss at Toronto on Monday. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 shots for his eighth win.Atkinson put Columbus (13-7-2) ahead to stay with a short-handed goal at 16:14 of the second. He grabbed a feed at the blue line from Alexander Wennberg and wristed a shot by Andersen from between the circles.Atkinson has eight goals and four assists during his scoring streak. His goal-scoring streak is one shy of the franchise record set by Geoff Sanderson during the 2002-03 season.Toronto dropped consecutive games for the first time since Oct. 29 and Nov. 1. It had won four in a row and seven of eight before Wednesday’s 5-2 loss at Carolina.Ron Hainsey and Kasperi Kapenen scored for the Maples Leafs (15-8-0), and Frederik Andersen stopped 20 shots.Anderson got the Blue Jackets on the board 3:55 into the first period, forcing a Boone Jenner rebound past Andersen’s left side on Columbus’ first shot of the game.Anderson got his 10th of the season midway through the first, making it 2-0 when he swatted a bouncing puck past Andersen.“We wanted to come out pretty hard,” Anderson said. “They came out hard, they came out really fast. They played pretty good down low. They were working our D a little bit. We needed to find a way to win tonight, and that’s what we did.”The Maple Leafs then rallied. Hainsey drove a point shot past Bobrovsky for his third of the season at 16:16 of the first, and Kapenen tied it 2:58 into the second when he slipped by a Jenner check in the neutral zone and beat Bobrovsky for his 10th.“This was as good a road game as we have played in a while www.officialbruinsproonline.com , to be honest with you,” Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. “I thought our guys skated good. We turned the puck over on their first goal, and then on their fourth goal, so you can’t do that. The bottom line is we played heavy, we played fast. We had lots of good things.“We didn’t score and they did. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”Hannikainen made it 4-2 with his second of the season 3:35 into the third.NOTES: Toronto D Igor Ozhiganov got his first NHL point when he assisted on Hainsey’s goal in the first.UP NEXTMaple Leafs: Host Philadelphia on Saturday.Blue Jackets: Visit Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Montreal Canadiens will get a good measure of where they stand in this early season when they host the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals at Bell Centre on Thursday. The Canadiens, who finished 14th in the Eastern Conference last season, are 6-3-2, but are coming off one of their poorest performances of the season, a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on home ice Tuesday. It was the Stars’ first road win of the season. This will be the second of a three-game homestand for the Canadiens, which concludes Saturday when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Canadiens are in the first wild-card position in the Eastern Conference.Article continues below ...Canadiens coach Claude Julien wasn’t sure Wednesday who would be available to face the Capitals. Top forwards Brendan Gallagher and Paul Byron did not practice Wednesday. Gallagher is expected to play while Byron’s (lower body) status is uncertain. If Byron cannot play Boston Bruins T-Shirts Authentic , forward Andrew Shaw, who has battled a series of injuries (concussion and knee) and has been a healthy scratch for the past two games, could be back in the lineup.“It’s really hard. My game isn’t at the level it should be,” Shaw told the team’s website. “I missed a lot of games. With the speed of games night after night, I have to be at my best … I’ll be ready when the team needs me.”Julien was preaching patience with Shaw, who is at his best when he plays an energy game and agitates the opposition.“We had a conversation and we were honest. He listened and he understood. At the end of the day, it isn’t his fault or mine,” Julien told reporters at his daily briefing. “We have to work together to get him back playing his best hockey. He had a lot of major injuries, so he has to get back on track.“When Shaw is at his best, he brings a lot to the table. He can play on the top lines Boston Bruins Hoodies Authentic , on the power play and on the penalty kill. He can also be an energy player on the fourth line. He can bring a little bit of everything.”Julien also juggled his lines after the loss to the Capitals with an interesting all-Finns line of Artturi Lehkonen, rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Joel Armian skating together in practice.Carey Price will start in goal for the Canadiens and will face Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who is showing no signs of a Stanley Cup hangover. Ovechkin leads the Capitals with eight goals, three off the league lead held by Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins. The Canadiens have been one of Ovechkin’s favorite teams to play against over the years. He had 49 points (27 goals and 22 assists) in 46 games against the Canadiens. Ovechkin seems to light up when he plays in the electric atmosphere at Bell Centre.Capitals rookie coach Todd Reirden said Ovechkin has become a more well-rounded player.“I’ve liked how his overall game has been good and consistent, and I’ve liked how his first 10 games have been compared to last year’s 10 games,” Reirden told NHL.com. “Maybe he had a few more goals initially, obviously, with the hat tricks and stuff like that, but his overall game for me is better.”Ovechkin started last season with seven goals in two games — three against the Ottawa Senators and four against the Canadiens.Ovechkin modified his offseason workouts, taking more time off between sessions last summer.“Mentally Boston Bruins Hats Authentic , I feel better,” he told NHL.com. “But physically, it’s hard to say because last year we had a different schedule. Last year, almost every second day we had a game. and this year as soon as you get in a rhythm then you have days off. But right now, almost every second day we’re going to have a game, so it’s going to be fun.”The Capitals (5-3-2, fourth in the Metropolitan Division) will finish a four-game road trip against the Canadiens. They are 2-1-0 so far on the trip across Canada.Capitals defenseman Brooks Orik will miss the game against the Canadiens after sustaining a lower body injury against the Calgary Flames on Saturday. The Capitals called up Aaron Ness from their Hershey farm team in the AHL.

      Bonjour Bob AST,

    • NASHVILLE Derrick Henry Jersey , Tenn.

    • from moving the ball Alfred Morris Jersey , the San Francisco 49ers defense has fared all right early this season.
    • in any true “rebuild” happening in the NFL is clearly exhibited in the case of the 2018 LA Rams.
