  1. Locked on Titans with Rhett Bryan of Titans Radio Last night we were joined on Locked on Titans by the very talented Rhett Bryan of Titans Radio. He talked about the 2 days of joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and what it is like to watch practice with Dave McGinnis. You can listen to the show here. One note , we did have a little bit of an audio issue with Rhett at the beginning, but it got much better as the show progressed. You can follow Rhett on Twitter here.As always, we would love for you to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also follow the show page on Twitter here.It is going to be interesting to see how much info we get about the team between now and week 1 with yesterday being the last day of open practices. Mike Vrabel has kept everything very close to vest even when people could see what was happening. I can’t imagine what it will be like for the next couple of weeks when he doesn’t have to tell anybody anything. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Wesley Woodyard laughs when asked if the 32-year-old linebacker has found a fountain of youth.Coming off a career-high 172 tackles, Woodyard once again is leading the Tennessee Titans in tackles despite missing two starts and nearly three full games with an injured shoulder. He sets the tone for the NFL's second-best scoring defense, a unit that has taken a big leap in several statistical categories this season under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel and coordinator Dean Pees. Woodyard, now in his 11th NFL season, says the secret to his success as a former undrafted free agent out of Kentucky is much simpler."I'm surrounded by a bunch of great guys that I love to go to work with every week," Woodyard said. "They make my job easier, showing up to work man I enjoy being here. And most importantly, I've had the chances to learn and take the bits and pieces from a lot of people that I came across in this game of football and now just going out there doing what I do. I love the game, so go and play and have fun and be free."An undrafted free agent in 2008, Woodyard signed with Denver and wound up voted a team captain in each of his six seasons with the Broncos. He signed with Tennessee after the Broncos lost the 2014 Super Bowl to Seattle and has been a captain each season with the Titans. The 6-foot, 233-pound linebacker credits his longevity and success to a combination of keeping the driven mentality of being undrafted mixed with an ever-changing cast of head coaches and defensive systems."I had three new head coaches and a new D coordinator every year the first five years," Woodyard said. "I use it as a blessing man. I got a chance to learn five new systems, got a chance to put football out there for new coaches, and this league man, the turnover ratio is so huge. Every year it's a different system, different schemes and I've been blessed to be in a lot of different schemes: 4-3s, 3-4s Harold Landry Jersey White , new coaches, old coaches. So I've seen a lot."With the Titans, Woodyard has had three different head coaches and the chance to play for a pair of defensive coordinator legends in Dick LeBeau and now Dean Pees. His current coordinator coached Ray Lewis and Ed Reed in Baltimore and said what Woodyard has in common with those players is being a pro knowing how to take care of their bodies. They also study hard."And if they have a shortcoming in any area, they know how to overcome that shortcoming," Pees said. "We all get older and we all get slower, … but the guys that know how to handle that, they all play smarter as they get older, and don't rely as much on their talent as their instincts. And Wesley is definitely in that same caliber."Woodyard, also switched to a vegan diet last year , is surrounded by youth at inside linebacker with Jayon Brown in his second season, 2018 first-round draft pick Rashaan Evans and six-year veteran Daren Bates. Woodyard is leading the way with 72 tackles, and he's tied for second on the Titans with 3½ sacks. He also has five tackles for loss as the Titans (5-5) prepare to visit Houston (7-3) on Monday night. The linebacker jokes he heard being in your 30s is the new prime."The biggest thing for me man is getting better every year, to challenge myself to get better at something every year and continue to get better. Me coming in the league undrafted, you have that chip on your shoulder where you got to prove yourself every year no matter if you're a first-round pick or a late-round pick, you got to go every year, and that's just been my mentality."Notes: The Titans went through a walk-through practice Thursday, taking advantage of an extra day before their game in Houston. QB Marcus Mariota was limited with an injured neck, and Vrabel says they will test Mariota's arm Friday because they didn't throw much Thursday. WR Taywan Taylor (left foot) and C Ben Jones (shoulder) also were limited. RB David Fluellen (knee) did not practice.
  2. The National Football League today announced that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2. This is the second consecutive NFC Offensive Player of the Week Award for Fitzpatrick. Against the Philadelphia Eagles M.J. Stewart Jersey , Fitzpatrick completed 27-of-33 passes (81.8 pct.) for 402 yards (12.18 yards per attempt), with four touchdowns and one interception, compiling a passer rating of 144.4. Fitzpatrick, who threw four touchdowns in Week 1 against New Orleans, is just the third player in NFL history to throw at least four touchdowns in each of his team’s first two games of the season, joining Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes (2018) and New England’s Drew Bledsoe (1997). He also joins New England’s Tom Brady (2011) and Carolina’s Cam Newton (2011) as the only players in NFL history to record at least 400 passing yards in each the first two games of the season. He is the first NFL quarterback to throw for at least 400 yards in consecutive games since Philip Rivers in 2013.Fitzpatrick is the third player since the 1970 NFL/AFL merger to record consecutive games with 400 yards passing and four touchdowns, joining Miami’s Dan Marino (12/2/84 vs. L.A. Raiders-12/9/84 at Indianapolis) Tennessee’s Billy Volek (12/13/04 vs. Kansas City-12/19/04 at Oakland). He is the first player since the merger to do so in the first two games of the season. He is the only player in NFL history to throw for at least 400 yards and four touchdowns in each of the first two games of the season. Fitzpatrick’s 151.5 passer rating is the highest mark through two games since the 1970 NFL/AFL merger (minimum 40 pass attempts). Fitzpatrick is the first player in the NFL to post consecutive games with a passer rating of 140 or higher since 2015 (Seattle’s Russell Wilson, 11/29/15 vs. PIT-12/6/15 at MIN). He is the first player in Buccaneers history to do so. Fitzpatrick threw two 75-yard touchdowns against Philadelphia. He is the first player in franchise history to record multiple touchdown passes of 75 yards or more in the same game and the first player to do so since Week 1 of 2017 (Alex Smith, at New England, 9/7/17). He has four touchdown passes of 50+ yards through the first two games of the season, tying N.Y. Jets QB Joe Namath (1972) for the most 50+ yard touchdown passes through the first two games of the season in NFL history. Fitzpatrick joins Josh Freeman (Weeks 5 & 9 , 2010) and Brad Johnson (Weeks 9 & 14, 2002) as the only players in team history to earn NFC Offensive Player of the Week multiple times in the same season. He is the first ever player in franchise history to win NFC Player of the Week in consecutive weeks. This is Fitzpatrick’s seventh career Offensive Player of the Week award, having earned the honor twice this season as well as with the St. Louis Rams (Week 12, 2005), the Houston Texans (Week 13, 2014) and the New York Jets (Weeks 14 & 16, 2015; Week 2, 2016).This report comes courtesy of the Buccaneers Communications Department. Of the looming changes in Tampa, cornerback Brent Grimes undoubtedly will be one of them. The 35-year-old defender opened up while appearing on his wife’s podcast, explaining what went wrong for him with the Bucs this year.“We get to the Steelers and then they start asking me to follow people,鈥?Grimes said via Womens Cameron Brate Jersey , regarding the Week Three Monday night game. And he regarded that as a slap in the face, because he believes that cornerbacks who follow the No. 1 receiver “earn $13 to $15 million.” (Grimes made $7 million for 2018.)Grimes blames his performance for the full year on that one moment.鈥淭hat just f–ked up my whole vibe for the whole year to be completely honest,鈥?Grimes said.Ordinarily, honesty is preferred. But in this case, Grimes would have been better off keeping his candor to himself, if he hopes to extend his career by another season. Once a guy becomes part of a team, he should do what he’s asked to do by his coaches, and he should welcome any unexpected chances to compete as an opportunity, not a hassle.

  4. Mirage or Oasis? Projecting the rest of the Seattle Seahawks’ 2018 season Sunday afternoon saw the Seattle Seahawks crawling out of the NFC West basement by (finally) winning a game Doug Baldwin Jersey , toppling the Dallas Cowboys 24-13 at CenturyLink Field. On the face of it, an 11-point win at home, with a 100-yard rusher and a +3 turnover differential might make you think that the team has officially turned the corner. I’m here to pour a tiny bit of cold water on that notion.Even Pete Carroll couldn’t help himself post-game when he talked about playing the game they wanted to, particularly with running the ball and controlling field position via the punting game. The thing is, though...The running game was bad, it was inefficient, wasteful at times and ill-advised.Using data from Warren Sharp’s Sharp Box Score, we see that the Seahawks ran a whopping17 times on 1st down alone for a grand total of 39 yards, which comes out to 2.3YPC and 41% Success Rate. Both of those metrics, YPC and Success Rate were below league averages of 4.2 YPC and 44% respectively in 2017. While running on 1st down is generally inefficient, the Seahawks were more inefficient than usual and yet committed to doing so on a horrifying 68% of their first downs. It’s one thing to commit to a philosophy, it’s another to stick to a philosophy that regularly puts you behind the sticks when you know you’re either bad at it or doing it far too often. The Seahawks are again being far too conservative on 4th down. Right after intercepting Dak Prescott (and having a huge return wiped off the board), the Seahawks had a three-play drive for six yards ending with a drop by Brandon Marshall. The ball was on the Dallas 45-yard line, the Dallas defense hadn’t exactly looked great to that point, and the Seahawks defense has looked shaky for the previous two weeks. Rather than go for it on 4th down, the Seahawks punted 38 yards (dragging Michael Dickson’s average punt yardage down). Assuming even a league-average chance of making the 1st down, the Seahawks stood to benefit more by going for it than had they punted. Work done ages ago by Brian Burke and Kevin Quealy shows how NFL coaches continued to leave points on the field by being too conservative on 4th down. The pass rush finally showed upThe defense got pressure on Sunday in ways they didn’t over the previous two weeks, with 10 QB hits of Dak Prescott, 5 of which were sacks Ed Dickson Jersey , and a pair of interceptions courtesy of Earl Thomas (Tongue in cheek: “Pay the man!”). The reason for cautious optimism here is three-fold. First, the Dallas receivers are legitimately bad, generating little separation at the line of scrimmage or late in routes. Secondly, the offense has been described as remedial in some circles, even garnering stinging criticism from former Cowboy WR Dez Bryant and is the butt of a great many jokes on Twitter. Most importantly however is the situation on their offensive line. Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick is out indefinitely with Guillain-Barr茅 syndrome, rookie second-rounder Connor Williams has been struggling mightily at guard, and La’el Collins is doing his best Germain Ifedi impression at right tackle. With those things in mind it’s hard to get too excited by the performance. We’ll have to wait until the Los Angeles Rams home game in two weeks before we can draw any solid conclusions about their effectiveness, or lack thereof. After reading this, you might be thinking that I’m completely down on the Seahawks, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I like Chris Carson as a player even if I think the Seahawks are using him poorly (give him the ball in the air).I happen to think that Russell Wilson, when he’s on his game, is a great player and he showed some of that on Sunday with a number of decisive throws into really tight coverage, including the TD to Tyler Lockett.Mostly though it comes down to schedule. The Arizona Cardinals are bad, the San Francisco 49ers just lost their franchise QB Jimmy Garoppolo for the season and the Oakland Raiders are a dumpster fire, courtesy of Jon Gruden. That makes for five very winnable games this season, even if everything else is a complete toss-up.There are definite bright spots looking forward but it’s still impossible to say if they’re a mirage or the real deal. I said last week that the Seattle Seahawks’ run-heavy approach to offense in 2018 was discussed to death. That doesn’t mean that we’re done discussing it, though! The Seahawks undoubtedly had one..."I said last week that the Seattle Seahawks’ run-heavy approach to offense in 2018 was discussed to death. That doesn’t mean that we’re done discussing it, though! The Seahawks undoubtedly had one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL this season, through a combination of an improved offensive line Womens David Moore Jersey , a healthy Chris Carson, and the removal of Eddie Lacy lumbering and stumbling his way for what felt like zero yards per carry. This was a pleasant flip from 2017 and much of 2016, which was seemingly Pete Carroll’s top goal for 2018....But if you thought the Seahawks did a ton of “run-run-pass” last season, or at least a lot of early down rushing, you would be correct. And the splits for 1st-3rd quarters are pretty ridiculous.FiveThirtyEight also did a table last month showing that the Seahawks used “run-run-pass” more than any other team in the NFL.Unsurprisingly, this led to the Seahawks placing themselves in “3rd and manageable.” Their third-down success rate ranked 27th in the NFL. It should be noted that they ranked 8th in getting first-downs on early downs, so the offense was at its most effective when avoiding third-down. What is most telling is that the RRP nature of the Seahawks offense had a negative impact on the passing game, specifically Russell Wilson’s sack rate. On early downs, Wilson’s sack rate was roughly 7.5% (24 sacks incurred on 318 regular season dropbacks). Once it gets to third-down? He took 26 sacks on just 153 dropbacks, a rate of 17%.It’s almost as if the run-heavy approach leads to obvious passing downs. And somehow David Moore led the team in third-down targets in the regular season at 25, raking in just 11 catches for 9 first-downs. I wonder why this team struggled on third-down so much. Hmm...Don’t get me wrong, it is awesome that Seattle has a formidable rushing attack, an efficient passing game, and a top-10 offense. But there’s always room for improvement, and the goal for the Seahawks next season shouldn’t be “run less often.” It should be “run smarter.” Three of the four most successful three-play sequences for the Seahawks involved an early down pass, while the other was three consecutive runs. Brian Schottenheimer and Pete Carroll need to make adjustments to let the passing game succeed earlier, and don’t repeatedly put Russell Wilson in situations where his efficiency drops and his sacks go up.
  5. NASHVILLE , Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans made a coaching change after winning their first playoff game in 14 years to rev up Marcus Mariota and the offense. So far, the Titans have taken a major step backward on offense with their first-time head coach and his offensive coordinator who had never called plays in a regular-season game until last month.“We’re not going to have a mid-season report,” coach Mike Vrabel said Monday. “We’re not going to have a State of the Union Address. We’re going to try to get better. We’re going to try to improve it. We’re going to try to take what we have and give them the best opportunity to go make some plays. We have to get the quarterback going and improve this week.”The Titans (3-3) have little time to address the offensive problems before leaving for the franchise’s first game in London against the Los Angeles Chargers (4-2).They now have lost two straight games in which they didn’t score a single touchdown. The skid follows a three-game winning streak where they won a third game without scoring a TD with coordinator Matt LaFleur and the Titans showing plenty of creativity to work around a variety of injuries on offense. The offensive woes include:— Only 87 points scored, ahead of only Arizona (82) and Buffalo (76) — a team that beat Tennessee 13-12 on Oct. 7.— A 21-0 loss to Baltimore was the franchise’s first shutout at home since leaving Texas for Tennessee in 1997.— A season-low 106 yards total offense.— Derrick Henry ran a season-low seven times against Baltimore in a run game Vrabel said, “We weren’t able to commit to.”— A passing attack that ranks 30th in the NFL, ahead of only Buffalo and Arizona Womens Will Compton Jersey , a pair of teams starting rookie quarterbacks.— Giving up 11 sacks in a single game after allowing only nine through the first five games. Marcus Mariota was sacked more times than he completed passes (10). According to NFL research, since 1960 only the Packers gave up a higher percentage of sacks on pass attempts (44 percent) in a loss to Detroit in 1965 than the Titans (42.3 percent)“We’ve got to get back to the drawing board, continue to work on our process and see what we can do better,” Mariota said. The Titans have talent with a pair of Heisman Trophy winners in Mariota (2014) and Henry (2015), a two-time Pro Bowl left tackle in Taylor Lewan and a right tackle in Jack Conklin who was an All Pro in 2016 as a rookie. But they are missing three-time Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker who broke his leg in the opener with nobody replacing his production yet.Tennessee also has the tiebreaker in the struggling AFC South over both Jacksonville and Houston, each at 3-3. The Titans get their bye when they return from London before a visit to Dallas and a home game Nov. 11 against New England.“We have to improve Steve McNair Jersey White ,” Vrabel said. “We’ve got a logjam in our division, and we’ve got to get on a plane and we’ve got to go to London, and we’ve got to play a tough opponent and we have to win. We’ve got to find a way to win.”Notes: The Titans added WR Devin Ross to the practice squad and let go WR Chad Hansen. The Titans put Ross on injured reserve during their final roster cuts at the end of the preseason. While he isn’t young, 30, he is a guy that is still productive. He had 9 sacks last season in just 12 games. He will probably get some pretty good money, but it won’t be anything that is going to break the salary cap.We are just under a week away from the opening of free agency and things are really starting to move. The dead part of the offseason is just about over. Now is the time where things get fun!
  6. TAMPA Bryan Anger Jersey , Fla. (AP) — Jason Pierre-Paul says he doesn’t feel he has anything to prove in his ninth NFL season, first with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s been the most consistent and productive player on a struggling defense with 10 1/2 sacks through 11 games, yet insists he’s merely doing his job after being acquired from the New York Giants in an offseason trade.“I guess, I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do: play some great football,” said the two-time Pro Bowl defensive end, who spent eight seasons with the Giants after entering the NFL as a first-round draft pick in 2010.The Bucs traded for Pierre-Paul in March, hoping to bolster an anemic pass rush after finishing last in the league a year ago in passing and total yards allowed, as well as sacks with 22.Until Sunday, when the 29-year-old Pierre-Paul sacked Nick Mullens during the first half of a 27-9 victory over San Francisco, Tampa Bay hadn’t had a player with 10 or more sacks in a season since Simeon Rice had 14 in 2005.Although the Bucs are a disappointing 4-7, Pierre-Paul’s relentless work ethic has drawn rave reviews from teammates and coaches. And while it’s been gratifying to come in and be the type of player Tampa Bay was hoping to get, Pierre-Paul reiterated he’s motivated by his love for the game — not to prove the Giants were wrong to trade him.“I know I was still the same player, just things change. Teams change. That’s just the business side of football,” Pierre-Paul said. “Like I said earlier, there’s no hard feelings. It’s just things change.”It’s the third time in his career that the 6-foot-6, 275-pound end has double-digit sack totals. He had a career-best 16 1/2 in 2011, when he was an All-Pro and helped the Giants win the Super Bowl, and 12 1/2 in 2014.This year is his most productive since Pierre-Paul suffered a serious hand injury in a Fourth of July fireworks accident three years ago, though his numbers have increased steadily from one in eight games in 2015 to seven in 2016 to 8 1/2 in his final season in New York. With 10 1/2 in his first season back in the city where he played college ball at South Florida, Pierre-Paul was tied with Von Miller for fourth in the league behind Aaron Donald (14 1/2), Danielle Hunter (11 1/2) and Chandler Jones (11) through Sunday’s games. J.J. Watt had 10 entering Houston’s game against Tennessee on Monday night.“Jason’s been our most productive and our most consistent player on defense,” coach Dirk Koetter said.“He plays extremely hard. He’s fought through multiple injuries and continues to do that to play,” Koetter added. “He’s set the standard very high for everybody else on defense — for everybody on our football team really, from an effort and fighting-through-injuries standpoint.”Pierre-Paul, who has 69 career sacks Gerald McCoy Jersey , dismisses the notion that his success is especially impressive considering he’s overcome the fireworks accident that severely damaged his right hand to be a dominant player again.Nevertheless, his play has inspired teammates.Six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was the third overall pick in the 2010 draft, selected 12 spots ahead of Pierre-Paul. He has 54 1/2 career sacks, including 9 1/2 five years ago, when he was an All-Pro and came close to ending the double-digit drought.“Listen, I’ve been here a long time, OK. And for me to see this happen is very special. He’s going to downplay it. I’m not,” McCoy said. “Very special — something we haven’t seen in a long time, man. This dude deserves everything coming his way, and I love him.”Buccaneers HC Dirk Koetter happy with the progress of all three quarterbacks The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have only one preseason game left and the team is beginning to look forward to week one against New Orleans. For the most part, the team has performed well during the first three games. Of course, at times the games get sloppy and it is noticeable that the second and third string players are on the field, but we only have to deal with one more of those games. One thing that has been consistent all preseason for Tampa Bay has been the play of their quarterbacks. Head coach Dirk Koetter commented on his quarterbacks today and is extremely pleased with all three guys.“Yeah, very well. I mean, it would be hard not to be the way all three of those guys are really doing a good job,” Koetter said. “I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Fitz [Ryan Fitzpatrick] now has been through a whole cycle with us, Griff’s [Ryan Griffin] been here for three and of course, Jameis [Winston],” Koetter said.“And then [Quarterbacks Coach] Mike Bajakian does a really good job with them in the meeting room so that’s where your OTAs pay off, your classroom stuff pays off and those three guys have done a really nice job of carrying it to the field.”It is well documented that Winston will miss the first three games of the regular season and that Fitzpatrick will be the starting quarterback. However, based on his performance through three games, Buccaneer fans should be much more confident in Fitzpatrick then they were when the suspension was announced. Fitzpatrick has looked in-sync with his receivers and seems to have a very good understanding of the offense. It is his second year with the team so that is to be expected, but he does look much more comfortable this season then he did last. One of the biggest story lines through the first few weeks of the regular season will be if Ryan Fitzpatrick can keep the Buccaneers afloat until Winston returns. If the team can escape that three game stretch with at least one win, Fitz will have done his job.
  7. The San Francisco 49ers coaching staff is headed to Mobile Tevin Coleman Jersey White , Alabama next week, and unfortunately they (and the Raiders staff) will not get to work with arguably the top senior prospect. The Senior Bowl released their official rosters and Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen is not included on either the North or South rosters. Here’s the South roster the 49ers coaching staff will be working with next week.It is not the most shocking development. Allen is looking like a top ten, if not top five pick, and he is avoiding a potential injury skipping out on a week of practices and the Saturday game. Injuries can happen at any point in the pre-draft process, but this removes the last remaining true football workout before the draft. He’ll likely be at the Combine, have a workout at the Kentucky campus, and have numerous private visits, but none will be the same as the normal football practice that would happen in Mobile. It’s not surprising, but it’s still disappointing for the 49ers. They can learn plenty about him outside of the Senior Bowl, but it would have given them a great opportunity to decide if he is really worth the No. 2 overall pick. They’ll make the decision regardless, but a full week of one-on-one time would have been helpful. Injuries have been a huge problem for the 49ers; that’s not a new flash. Football Outsiders hasn’t released its 2018 Adjusted Games Lost statistics yet, but the Niners were 23rd in 2017 and 24th the year before. (Both years, the LA Rams were No. 1 in the NFL, meaning the fewest games lost.)So, the Niners fired their Strength and Conditioning coach and also their Medical Director. Monday evening Bradley Pinion Jersey White , Matt Barrows reported the team hired Ben Peterson to serve as the head of a now combined medical and training unit. Peterson joins the 49ers after spending the past two and a half years serving as Sports Science director for the Philadelphia Flyers.Peterson is a Minnesota kid, so the hockey makes sense. But what he really is a super smart analytics guy, with a PhD in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. Before the Flyers he was the Director of Research and Analytics at Catapult, a leading sports science company that makes high-tech positioning monitors for elite athletes.Catapult devices use precision GPS, accelerometers and gyroscopes to track complicated data about movement, force and impact, and their staff helps clients (such as the Flyers) interpret that data. They liked his work so much that they hired him away. Back in 2015, he gave a presentation on using Catapult devices in the NHL. You can view it above, or click here. It’s very interesting if you’re as big a geek as I am. If not, I watched it so you don’t have to. Here are the highlights. You can tell why the Niners hired him from the title of his talk: “Keeping Your Players On The Ice.” He notes that hockey has a higher games-lost rate (50% of rosters) than even football (37%). Some of that might be because football has larger rosters of players to sub in.He has a great statistic about the value of avoiding injury: as of 2015, the last six Stanley Cups had been won by teams with the fewest man-games lost. And when you think about it, postseason success in football has a lot to do with avoiding injuries, too. Maybe you noticed that there was not a single player on the injury report for either team in the Super Bowl.He is very focused on “total player load,” which is basically the amount of exertion and impact a player has. “Total player load is No. 1 predictor of injury in all sports including football,” he noted.Load doesn’t come only from games Patrick Willis Jersey White , though. Practices pile on the load too; not as much but there are a lot more practices than games, and it all adds up.The Catapult device can track load numerically, and it makes a big difference. He shared some data from the Minnesota Golden Gophers college hockey team. When their weekly practice load was over 900 whatever-units, they won 48% of their games. But when it was under 900, they won 80%.There are other interesting applications, too. Data showed that Gopher forwards were dropping off sharply in the third period, so they backed off on intensity of practices, especially late in the week, and saw an improvement.Since they measure every player at the beginning of the season when healthy, you can also use precise data to see how much power something like a sprained ankle has recovered. In football terms, you could track the force as a wide receiver plants a foot and cuts; if the number is a lot less than their healthy value, you might need to slow down their return or order more intense therapy on it.So what does it add up to? Expect lighter practices, more rotation of subs, and maybe an effort to find players with fewer “miles on them” in the draft.
  8. It would be unfair to compare just about any team to the 2013 Seattle Seahawks other than other championship teams. The 2013 Seahawks are in the conversation for a top-five defense all-time and unlike many all-time defenses Womens David Moore Jersey , they also had a quarterback who is on a Hall of Fame path through his first seven seasons, a Hall of Fame caliber running back, and a receiver who could definitely be in the Hall of Slot Receivers and if he plays another 7-8 years at a high level ... who knows.Seattle’s 2018 team however had pretty much the quarterback, a hobbled version of that receiver, and the middle linebacker. They had some other nice pieces around them, an advantage here or there to the 2013 Seahawks, but if you actually compare them roster-to-roster you start to wonder just how in the hell this team went 10-6 and made the playoffs.Well, it’s because the 2018 Seahawks were a “playoff team” but as you’ll see in comparing position groups, they are nowhere near a “championship team.” In fact, if you think Seattle was close to resembling the 2012 Seahawks and are one year away from being like they were in 2013, I’d argue that after doing this comparison, they’re more like the 2011 version. Until they find out if Tre Flowers can develop like Richard Sherman, if they’ll have anyone close to the caliber of Earl Thomas, if Jacob Martin is on the rise, if they can add not one, but two really good edge rushers, another defensive tackle, if Shaquill Griffin can at least settle into being a Byron Maxwell type, then Seattle may be two years away from competing for first in the division rather than one. Much like 2012, the Seahawks had to get around a championship-caliber division-mate, and the LA Rams don’t seem likely to slow down that quickly. Now enough of the depressing stuff and onto the more depressing stuff.I’m comparing relevant players at each position. My judgment is just that: my judgment. It is not a fact, just an opinion, and in some cases it’s one that I could change with a good enough argument against it. When I went through each position, I came away with a score of 10 to 2 in advantage of the 2013 Seahawks and fittingly, I think you could make a case for 12-0. Even if you had it at 8-4, most of those eight wins were blowouts. The Seahawks have gone through a lot of changes in the wrong direction over the last five years and yes, I’m one of the optimistic and bright-side Seattle writers! QB - Russell Wilson vs Russell WilsonAdvantage - 2018You could call it a wash if you want to. I think Wilson has certainly improved over the last five years and is a more “complete” quarterback with all the experience that comes with starting the number of games he has in that period of time. Consider that he’s also doing more with a lot less. If you factored in salary then you could make a stronger argument for 2012-2015 Wilson, but I’m not doing that here.RB - Marshawn Lynch vs Chris CarsonBackups - Robert Turbin, Christine Michael vs Mike Davis, Rashaad PennyFB - Derrick Coleman vs Tre MaddenAdvantage - 2013Carson actually averaged .5 more yards per carry this season than Lynch did during Seattle’s Super Bowl run, and he’s one of my favorite backs in the league, but there’s only one Marshawn Lynch. That’s kind of also the point: Carroll could more easily utilize a single-back system with Lynch, who played more downs, didn’t miss any games, scored more touchdowns, and had more receiving yards. Even including backup contributions, the better backfield seemed to belong to 2013.WR - Doug Baldwin Shaquill Griffin Jersey Green , Golden Tate, Jermaine Kearse, Sidney Rice, Ricardo Lockette (Percy Harvin) vs Doug Baldwin, Tyler Lockett, David Moore, Jaron Brown, Brandon MarshallAdvantage - 20132018 Lockett might be the best receiver in the whole bunch, but this season also included a hobbled Baldwin and pretty poor depth that showed itself when they were called upon to do more because of Doug’s health. A healthy Baldwin and Tate were a more complete and consistent 1-2, while Kearse came up huge in the playoffs.TE - Zach Miller, Luke Willson, Kellen Davis vs Ed Dickson, Nick Vannett, Will DisslyAdvantage - 2013Miller didn’t quite live up to the expectations of his free agent contract in 2011 but he alone was probably far more effective than Dickson and Vannett combined. Would have liked to have seen more of Dissly, but unfortunately for everyone that did not happen. The tight ends in 2018 were perhaps one of the most underrated weaknesses of the team.OL - Russell Okung, James Carpenter, Max Unger, JR Sweezy, Breno Giacomini vs Duane Brown, JR Sweezy, Justin Britt, DJ Fluker, Germain IfediBackups - Paul McQuistan, Alvin Bailey, Lemuel Jeanpierre, Michael Bowie vs Joey Hunt, Jordan Simmons, Ethan Pocic, George FantAdvantage - 2013 I have it as 2013, but I don’t know, Okung did miss half of the season. Both lines had their strengths at left tackle and center, but I’d think Unger is typically considered the superior player to Britt. I don’t think any of the other starters are particular “strengths” but at best it might be a wash.DT - Brandon Mebane, Tony McDaniel, Clinton McDonald vs Jarran Reed, Shamar Stephen, Poona Ford, Nazair JonesAdvantage - 2013Similar to Lockett and the receiver Womens J.R. Sweezy Jersey , Reed might be the best of the group but the depth in 2013 was so fantastically better. We all like Ford, but he wasn’t even utilized that heavily until late in the year.DE - Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Chris Clemons. Red Bryant, O’Brien Schofield vs Frank Clark, Quinton Jefferson, Dion Jordan, Branden Jackson, Rasheem GreenAdvantage - 2013Either this or cornerback or safety is the biggest slaughter of comps, which emphasizes just how next-level the 2013 Seattle defense was. They will go down with a few Hall of Famers, a handful of Pro Bowlers, and a bevy of talented starters, some of whom were relegated to backup duty on that 53. Clark was a top-ranked pass rusher in 2018, but Avril, Bennett, Clemons, and Bryant is just sledgehammer after sledgehammer for opposing tackles and running backs. LB - Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, Bruce Irvin, Malcolm Smith, Mike Morgan vs Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, Mychal Kendricks, Barkevious Mingo, Jacob Martin, Austin Calitro, Shaquem GriffinAdvantage - 2013A couple of the names might be the same and Wagner is as good as ever, but Wright missed too much time, Kendricks was in the same boat, and Mingo’s not even as good as Smith, let alone Irvin. It’s another big advantage for 2013.CB - Richard Sherman, Brandon Browner, Byron Maxwell, Walter Thurmond vs Shaquill Griffin, Tre Flowers, Justin Coleman, Akeem KingAdvantage - 2013The number one corner is a blowout in 2013’s favor Womens Nick Vannett Jersey , the number two corner still has an advantage for 2013 though I think we are all hoping Flowers develops like Sherman did. You could maybe argue an advantage in the slot for 2018 but I’m not sure it would be a strong argument and this is another landslide for 2013.S - Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor vs Bradley McDougald, Tedric Thompson, Delano HillBackups - Jeron Johnson, Chris Maragos vs Maurice Alexander, Shalom LuaniAdvantage - 2013Moving on...K -Steven Hauschka vs Sebastian JanikowskiAdvantage - 2013Hauschka made 33 of 35 attempts in 2013 whereas Janikowski was 22 of 27 and had three missed PATs.P - Jon Ryan vs Michael DicksonAdvantage - 2018Woo, 2018! Some may argue Ryan over Dickson and I really would not care too much. Dickson is a first team All-Pro though and his net average 5.5 yards longer than Ryan’s was in 2013. The team may have been worse this season but Dickson only had four more punts this season than Ryan did that year. 9. Few rookies in 2018 have played as well as Colts second-round linebacker Darius Leonard Corey Davis Jersey White , part of an impressive turnaround in Indianapolis. Titans fans might be familiar with him, as he collected the easiest interception of the season off of Blaine, this was brutal.Through 16 games in his rookie season, Leonard has led the NFL in tackles (106), seven sacks, eight QB hits, 12 tackles for loss, an interception, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and six passes defensed. It’s safe to say he’s done everything and anything for this Colts defense, and with a playoff birth on the line the Titans are going to have to get a second taste of this rookie. The last time Leonard faced Tennessee, he collected five tackles, a sack on Marcus Mariota, an interception on Gabbert, a pass defensed, a QB hit and a forced fumble. So Titans fans should be familiar with how good this rookie has been. For more, here’s this week’s Titans Enemy Profile ahead of tonight’s Sunday Night Football his breakout game against the Eagles in Week 3, Leonard put up nine tackles , two sacks, two quarterback hits, five tackles for loss and a pass defensed. His defensed pass came against Zach Ertz, one of the best tight ends in the league. At the top of Ertz’s shallow outbreak on his route, Leonard recognizes the route break and his burst off his left foot and quick hip movement allow him to get an edge on the receiver without breaking down his quickness. He breaks up the pass and puts up one of many highlight plays on the linebackers typically don’t post too many sacks, yet Leonard his seven in his first season in the league. Combined with 12 tackles for loss and eight hits on quarterbacks, and Leonard is making his presence felt in coverage and on the rush. really impresses me about Leonard though is his tackling technique. If you’re leading the league in tackles in your rookie season, it’s either a fluke (Remember, you can have lots of tackles on big gains) or you’re doing something right. There will always be tackles that pad the stats, but Leonard’s tackling technique and approach to the ball have been as near flawless as you’d expect from a rookie.Leonard karate chops this ball out of the hands of Doug Martin. I’d like to repeat that: He karate chopped the ball out of the hands of Martin. He forces the fumble here and the Colts end up recovering, eventually helping them seal the win.Darius Leonard is up for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and he clearly has a case to win it. His ability to lock down backs and tight ends, his hip quickness and tackling ability are all spectacular, rookie or not. Leonard’s one of a few Colts players Tennessee will need to overcome if they want to return to the playoffs.Marcus Mariota will start won’t be limited; Jack Conklin should play Sunday So much good news on the injury front today! Mike Vrabel said after practice today that he doesn’t anticipate having to limit Marcus Mariota going forward. We might finally get to see the offense Matt LaFleur wants to run because it appears that Jack Conklin will be ready to play this week:OH BABY.The news is also good on Adoree Jackson. While he is still in the concussion protocol, he was able to practice today. Jackson still has to be cleared by the independent doctor, but it sounds like he could be ready to return in full as early as tomorrow.Dennis Kelly missed practice again today as he is still recovering from the illness that had him hospitalized before the Texans game. Rishard Matthews wasn’t at practice today. He was excused for personal reasons. Ryan Succop missed practice today with knee tendinitis, but it doesn’t sound like he is in jeopardy of missing any game action:The Titans were decimated by injuries in their first three games and went 2-1. I cannot wait to see what this team can do when it is finally healthy!
  10. As Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston makes his way toward a potentially major payday from his current team or someone else Beau Allen Jersey , Winston has removed completely an incident that could have complicated his career, considerably.According to Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times, Winston has settled the lawsuit brought against him by an Uber driver who accused Winston of groping her. The incident, which happened in March 2016, first came to light in November 2017. It sparked an NFL investigation and, eventually, a three-game suspension under the Personal Conduct Policy. The terms of the settlement weren’t, and surely won’t be, disclosed. Part of what the defendant in a case like this pays for is confidentiality, a very common term ensuring that the person who receives compensation won’t announce the amount paid to the world, which in turn creates the impression that the payment implies guilt.Winston has successfully avoided publication of chapter-and-verse details of the event. A negotiation with the NFL regarding his punishment , which kept the league from sharing those details with the world, may have gone a long way toward preventing Winston from becoming ostracized. The settlement of the civil lawsuit ensures that, barring a breach of the settlement agreement, the details never will emerge, allowing Winston to continue playing pro football without facing the kind of backlash that has forever altered multiple careers in the entertainment world. The Buccaneers are threatening an old and ugly NFL record.Tampa Bay is -19 in turnover margin this season, which is not only the worst in the NFL but on pace for the worst in NFL history. If the Buccaneers continue their current pace through 16 games, they’ll finish with a turnover margin of -34. The all-time record is -30, set by the Steelers in 1965.“Well, turnovers are killing us right now,” said coach Dirk Koetter. “We’re minus-19, we’re last in the league Ali Marpet Jersey , 13 in the last four games, 13 turnovers and no takeaways. That’s by far the number-one thing that’s hurting our team. [We] have talked about it many times 鈥?every turnover has its own story. If there was one thing to it, it would be easy to fix. As a team, we’re turning it over too much and not getting any takeaways on the other side.”The Buccaneers’ turnover differential is almost entirely attributable to interceptions: Their offense has thrown 19 interceptions, while their defense has only intercepted one pass all season. Fumbles have been close to a wash, with their offense losing six fumbles and their defense recovering five. However, with Ryan Fitzpatrick remaining the starting quarterback, the Buccaneers are unlikely to break the record. Fitzpatrick has thrown interceptions on 4 percent of his passes this season. Jameis Winston has thrown interceptions on 7 percent of his passes this season. So the Bucs would be more likely to keep the interceptions going if Winston were the starter. (Winston also fumbles more often than Fitzpatrick.)Turnovers are often inconsistent, and the Bucs are more likely to regress toward the mean for the rest of the season than they are to continue losing the turnover margin at a pace of -2 a game. But if they do keep this pace, they’ll be the worst team ever at giveaways and takeaways.
  11. Richard Sherman gives Ahkello Witherspoon 24 hours The San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit LIons 30-27 in an ugly win. It is still a win Fred Warner Jersey , but the team has a lot to work on, none more than cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon who had a very bad day in coverage. While Richard Sherman was not targeted near as often, Witherspoon was picked on all afternoon, leading to the 49ers benching him late in the 4th quarter. Sherman has been seen as Witherspoon’s mentor and was asked about what may be Witherspoon’s worst day as a pro in his post-game press conference. Sherman said whether he had a good game or a bad game, Witherspoon has 24 hours and then it’s time to move on.It’s not going to get any easier for Witherspoon. The 49ers are traveling to Kansas City to face the Chiefs. A team whose aerial attack is nothing short of elite. If they can’t get the ball to Tyreek Hill, they can elect to go towards Travis Kelce or Sammy Watkins instead and achieve the same results. Sherman is going to figure into the Chiefs’ game plan as will Witherspoon. Witherspoon no doubt has a chance to bounce back Solomon Thomas Jersey , but no matter who the 49ers put him on next Sunday, he’s going to have his work cut out for him. “I believe in him,” Sherman said later on. “I believe in him, I think he believes in himself, there’s just simple mistakes.” Wednesday, March 20th Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey , 2019 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet"NFL free agency’s 1st week was a whirlwind of moves for the 49ers. They were able to bring in help at some of their top needs with contracts that they can get out of quickly if the players do not work out. Dee Ford is an immediate impact player that they brought on to help in the pass rush, which was the biggest need. He had an outstanding season with the Chiefs last season and the 49ers will hope he continues that trend. LB Kwon Alexander and CB Jason Verrett are good players if they can stay on the field. The pairing of Kwon with Fred Warner will give the 49ers one of the fastest linebacking corps in the league. With these 3 pickups, the 49ers should have upgraded their defense from last season. The defense may have been upgraded in free agency, but the 49ers still have the draft to continue to upgrade it. Holding the #2 pick gives the 49ers a shot at Nick Bosa or Quinnen Williams, who are regarded as the top 2 defensive players in this draft. The 49ers attended Alabama’s pro day on Tuesday. Most experts have the 49ers selecting Nick Bosa to help with the edge pass rush DeForest Buckner Jersey , but pairing Quinnen with DeForest Buckner would also be a nice upgrade on the line. After shaking up the training staff over the offseason, the 49ers announced the hiring of Dustin Little as the new head athletic trainer. He spent the last 5 seasons with the Denver Broncos with a few different job titles over the years. Quite a few players were injured last year and the 49ers will hope that the new training staff can keep the players off injury reserve.49ers linksIf he produces like last season, the 49ers defense will be vastly superior to last season’s | Dee Ford is ready to make sure 2018 performance is not a one hit wonder (Branch)There’s a lot of playmaking in the backfield | The 49ers built a very useful backfield (Wagoner)Jordan Matthews (Martin)Winner in free agency (Martin)Hope he stays healthy because he would form a nice duo with Fred Warner | Kwon Alexander (Maiocco)Meeting with Alabama’s Quinnen Williams (Chan)Ex-49er donates his brain to CTE study (Branch)Welcome to the Bay Dustin | Dustin Little named head trainer (49ers staff)New punter signed (Williams)A key special teamer stays | Raheem Mostert resigned (49ers staff)Trading for a veteran WR? 12. The Seattle Seahawks (9-6) are in the NFL playoffs after an amazing 38-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs (11-4). Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes Nazair Jones Jersey , Chris Carson rushed for over 100 yards and two scores, and the defense made just enough key plays to help the team pull off an upset win.1st HalfThe Chiefs got the ball first and after an eight-yard Tyreek Hill run, consecutive incomplete passes by Patrick Mahomes led to a rare KC three-and-out. Seattle almost had a three-and-out themselves, but Russell Wilson scrambled for 19 yards on 3rd and 13. Big runs by Chris Carson and Mike Davis, along with a nice sideline grab by Doug Baldwin put the Seahawks inside the Chiefs 10. A pitch play to JD McKissic got them to the 3. On 3rd and inches, Chris Carson stopped... then started... then stopped and started again for the touchdown. Great opening drive by Seattle! 7-0 Seahawks.Seattle was fortunate not to give up a wide open TD to Travis Kelce on a blown coverage, but Patrick Mahomes way overshot him. That proved somewhat costly, as they ended up kicking a field goal instead of getting into the end zone. 7-3 Seahawks.A third-down conversion to Jaron Brown and a pass interference drawn deep down the field by Tyler Lockett put the Seahawks well into Kansas City territory. Unfortunately, despite moving into the red zone, the drive stalled and Sebastian Janikowski missed a short field goal off the upright. That missed was a ten-point swing. A 10-play, 74-yard drive that featured mostly running plays, but the touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes was underneath to a wide open Damien Williams from two yards out. 10-7 Chiefs. After a three-and-out by Seattle, the Chiefs gave it right back to the Seahawks on a Damien Williams fumble, recovered by Jarran Reed after Dion Jordan knocked it out. A pass interference on 3rd and goal gave the Seahawks a new set of downs at the 1. On 2nd and goal, Wilson found a wide open Nick Vannett for a touchdown. 14-10 Seahawks.Frank Clark snuffed out Williams on a 3rd and 1 after a Seahawks timeout negated a successful QB sneak, so another three-and-out forced! Seattle’s two-minute drill predictbaly didn’t score, but they burned up enough clock before punting. The Chiefs did look for points before the half, but Chris Conley fumbled the ball after being wide open in Seahawks territory, and Delano Hill recovered the ball after Justin Coleman knocked it free. Even if he was tackled regularly, the clock likely would’ve run out.2nd HalfThe Seahawks drove into FG range to begin the half, and Sebastian Janikowski missed from 43 yards out, but Jordan Lucas was penalized for roughing the kicker and Janikowski was shaken up. He did come back onto the field and made it from 28 yards out. 17-10 Seahawks.Ladies and gentlemen... Michael Dickson drop kick kickoff.Unfortunately it took only 7 plays for the Chiefs to go 83 yards, with Mahomes throwing a dart to Charcandrick West for a 25-yard touchdown to tie the game. 17-17.Seattle’s ensuing drive looked doomed when they went to 3rd and 15, but Russell Wilson checked it down to Ed Dickson, who somehow broke through two tackles to keep the chains moving. That play was crucial, as Wilson would find Doug Baldwin in tight coverage for a 27-yard touchdown and the lead once more. 24-17 Seahawks. The Seahawks defense brought enough pressure to produce three straight incomplete passes from Mahomes. Seattle’s offense went three-and-out after Wilson missed Baldwin just about breaking free for a big play. Kansas City marched down the field and to the Seahawks 4 thanks to a gorgeous deep ball from Mahomes to Tyreek Hill, who was injured on the play after Justin Coleman landed on his right leg. The Seahawks stood firm after that and held the Chiefs to a Harrison Butker field goal. 24-20 Seahawks.Seattle gashed the Chiefs for a series of chunk plays. A play-action throw to Tyler Lockett, a big Wilson run after escaping a sack, a spin move by Carson to get another first down, and they were instantly in a goal-to-go situation. Wilson threw it incomplete on 3rd and goal, but a hold in the end zone gave Seattle a new set of downs. Next play? Touchdown to Ed Dickson. 31-20 Seahawks.Backs against the wall, the Chiefs went uptempo and needed just 2:55 of game clock to go 9 plays and 72 yards, with Mahomes converting a 4th and 1 and later finding Demarcus Robinson in the back of the end zone Womens Chris Carson Jersey , as he toe-tapped for the score. Mahomes ran it in on the two-point conversion. 31-28 Seahawks with 4:36 to go.After a Doug Baldwin drop on 2nd and 6, Wilson went to David Moore who was able to just barely get the first down based on forward progress. Two snaps player, Wilson uncorked a deep ball to Tyler Lockett for 45 glorious yards, but Russ was sacked on the next play. No worries, as Wilson found Baldwin for a ridiculous one-handed catch to the 1-yard line. Chris Carson bulldozed his way into the end zone shortly thereafter. 38-28 Seahawks with 2:29 to go.Seattle’s woeful kick coverage led to a 61-yard return well into Seahawks territory, but again the defense was able to hold the Chiefs to a field goal attempt. 38-31 Seahawks with 1:20 to go.The onside kick went out of bounds, GAME OVER! 38-31 Seahawks final.Seahawks injury updateRT George Fant limped off on Seattle’s opening drive due to a left ankle injury. Reflecting on that moment In his memoir, Allen concluded that he might have haggled more, but realized that "my heart wasn't in it. So I agreed."Allen was born in Seattle. After graduating from the city's private Lakeside School, where he met Gates, Allen spent two years at Washington State University. The two friends both dropped out of college to pursue the future they envisioned: A world with a computer in every home."There would be no Microsoft as we know it without Paul Allen," said longtime technology analyst Rob Enderle, who also consulted for Allen.Allen and Gates founded Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and their first product was a computer language for the Altair hobby-kit personal computer, giving hobbyists a basic way to program and operate the machine. After Gates and Allen found some success selling their programming language, MS-Basic, the Seattle natives moved their business in 1979 to Bellevue, Washington, not far from its eventual home in Redmond.Microsoft's big break came in 1980, when IBM Corp. decided to move into personal computers and asked Microsoft to provide the operating system.Gates and Allen agreed, even though they didn't have one to offer. To meet IBM's needs, they spent $50,000 to buy an operating system called QDOS from another startup in Seattle 鈥?without, of course, letting on that they had IBM lined up as a customer. Eventually, the product refined by Microsoft became the core of IBM PCs and their clones, catapulting Microsoft into its dominant position in the PC industry. The first versions of two classic Microsoft products, Microsoft Word and the Windows operating system, were released in 1983. By 1991, Microsoft's operating systems were used by 93 percent of the world's personal computers.Allen served as Microsoft's executive vice president of research and new product development until 1983, when he resigned after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. But Allen left Microsoft knowing he and Gates would be forever linked in the history of technology."We were extraordinary partners," Allen wrote. "Despite our differences , few co-founders had shared such a unified vision 鈥?maybe Hewlett and Packard and Google's Sergey Brin and Larry Page, but it was a short list."After leaving Microsoft, Allen would remain interested in technology, especially the field of artificial intelligence, which recalled first piquing his interest while he was still a teenager after reading "I, Robot," a science fiction book by Isaac Asimov."From my youth, I'd never stopped thinking in the future tense," Allen wrote in his 2011 memoir, "Idea Man."With his sister Jody Allen in 1986, Allen founded Vulcan, which oversees his business and philanthropic efforts. He founded the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the aerospace firm Stratolaunch, which has built a colossal airplane designed to launch satellites into orbit. He has also backed research into nuclear-fusion power and scores of technology startups.Allen also funded maverick aerospace designer Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne, which in 2004 became the first privately developed manned spacecraft to reach space.聽The SpaceShipOne technology was licensed by Sir Richard Branson for Virgin Galactic, which is testing a successor design to carry tourists on brief hops into lower regions of space.Yet Allen never came close to replicating Microsoft's success. What he always seemed to lack, Enderle said, was another Bill Gates to help fulfill his visions."He was a decent engineer who got the timing on an idea right once in his life, and it was a big one," Enderle said. When Allen released his memoir, he allowed "60 Minutes" inside his home on Lake Washington, across the water from Seattle, revealing collections that ranged from the guitar Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock to vintage war planes and a 300-foot yacht with its own submarine."My brother was a remarkable individual on every level," his sister Jody Allen said in a statement. "Paul's family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern," she added.Paul Allen's influence is firmly imprinted on the cultural landscape of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, from the bright metallic Museum of Pop Culture designed by architect Frank Gehry to the computer science center at the University of Washington that bears his name.In 1988 at 35, he bought the Portland Trail Blazers professional basketball team. He told The Associated Press that "for a true fan of the game, this is a dream come true."He also was a part owner of the Seattle Sounders FC, a major league soccer team, and bought the Seattle Seahawks. Allen could sometimes be seen at games or chatting in the locker room with players.Associated Press writers Michael Liedtke in San Francisco and Lisa Baumann in Seattle contributed to this report.
  13. NASHVILLE Kevin Byard Jersey , Tenn. (AP) — Blaine Gabbert threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to MyCole Pruitt with 4:30 left and the Tennessee Titans kept their playoff hopes alive by rallying to beat the Washington Redskins 25-16 on Saturday.Gabbert came off the bench for the third time this season after the Redskins knocked Marcus Mariota out of the game late in the first half with a stinger. Gabbert hit Taywan Taylor for 35 yards to jump-start the winning drive, Derrick Henry ran four times for 33 yards, his last an 18-yarder to the 2. Gabbert then hit Pruitt at the back of the end zone. The Titans (9-6) now must beat Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts and have either Baltimore or Pittsburgh lose once to earn the AFC's second wild-card spot for a second consecutive playoff berth. Safety Kevin Byard intercepted Josh Johnson's pass on third-and-3 with 1:17 left. Then Malcolm Butler picked off a pass as time expired and ran 56 yards for an emphatic TD.The Redskins (7-8) have lost five of six.RAVENS 22, CHARGERS 10CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Lamar Jackson threw for 204 yards and had the longest touchdown pass of his brief career, and Baltimore strengthened its chances of clinching a playoff spot. The Ravens (9-6) — who have won five of their last six with Jackson as the starter — dominated for most of the night to remain in possession of the last wild-card spot. They briefly trailed 10-6 early in the third quarter before Jackson completed a 68-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews.Justin Tucker's third field goal extended the lead to six and they put it away late in the fourth quarter when Patrick Onwuaso forced Antonio Gates' fumble and Tavon Young returned it 62 yards. Jackson, who was the 32nd overall pick in April, had his first 200-yard passing game, completing 12 of 22. Gus Edwards had 92 yards on 14 carries.Los Angeles (11-4) has clinched a playoff spot, but its hopes of winning the AFC West suffered a major blow. Kansas City can wrap up the division with a win on Sunday at Seattle. On a three-game winning streak, the Tennessee Titans return home for their last two games needing some help to get back to the playoffs for a second year in a row. There, they’ll face the 7-7 Washington Redskins tomorrow Marcus Mariota Jersey , and they are also fighting for a playoff spot with the Wild Card and NFC East races slipping away from them.If you’ve followed me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen me do a lot of charting on quarterback hits. Quarterback hits include sacks and plays where the quarterback was hit after releasing the pass (hits on penalties do not count unless those penalties were declined). And as it turns out, The Titans defense and Redskins offense are polar opposites. This time for this week’s Titans Enemy Profile, there won’t be any film breakdowns. Instead, this will be statistical breakdown—to be more specific—quarterback hits.First, let’s talk about the Redskins. On defense, they’ve produced 83 QB hits through 15 weeks, the 16th most in the league. Since Week 9 (the second half of the season), they’re 13th in QB hits produced with 40. Decent numbers to say the least as guys like Ryan Kerrigan and Jonathan Allen have cranked up the pressures this season, highlighting a talented defensive line. But here’s where it gets interesting: The Washington offense has allowed the 14th most QB hits on the season (87) and are tied with the Dolphins for second most allowed since Week 9 (51). Yikes. It doesn’t help that the team has lost their two starting quarterbacks for the season and have been decimated with injuries on the offensive line. That puts the Titans defense at a great advantage, as they have produced the fourth most quarterback hits since Week 9 (47) and are tied with the Vikings for 13th most on the season (85). On offense, Tennessee has allowed the ninth fewest QB hits all season (66) Ryan Tannehill Jersey , are tied with the Broncos for the 12th fewest allowed since Week 9 (35) and the second fewest allowed since Week 13 (10, behind the Browns’ 5).The Titans defense isn’t perfect, but with guys up front like Harold Landry, Jurrell Casey, Rashaan Evans and Jayon Brown gelling together, it’s made for some excellent games of defense in recent weeks. The offense clearly hasn’t been close to consistent, but Marcus Mariota has been able to side step pressure, and the offensive line has limited the hits to an extent. With both sides of the line playing well, that’ll need to continue tomorrow with the season on the line.

The NFL season doesn't start for another six weeks and already job security is an issue for some coaches.Yes Deone Bucannon Jersey , even in late July.Every season, teams that entered with low expectations show significant improvement and make unexpected deep postseason runs. Last season, Jacksonville with coach Doug Marrone went to the AFC championship game and held a late lead at New England before Tom Brady rallied the Patriots. And, of course, the Eagles and coach Doug Pederson, despite losing Carson Wentz to a torn ACL, beat Brady and Bill Belichick in the Super Bowl. There's always pressure on NFL coaches to win. And win now. Here are a few who enter the 2018 season on the hot seat:JASON GARRETT (67-53, 1-2 in playoffs)There's always pressure on the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, especially with Jerry Jones as owner. The franchise that has won five Super Bowls has not advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs since the 1995 season, the last year it won the NFL title. Garrett has 67 regular-season wins since taking over in the 2010 season. He has had only one losing season as head coach. However, he has reached the postseason only twice and won one game in the playoffs. The Cowboys were 13-3 two seasons ago and will be expected to be in playoff contention with a full season of quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott. But the Super Bowl champion Eagles are in their way in the NFC East.HUE JACKSON (9-39)Jackson has one win 鈥?one 鈥?in two seasons in Cleveland; the other eight came as head coach of the Raiders in 2011. The Browns beat the then-San Diego Chargers in overtime in Week 16 of the 2016 season. Otherwise they'd be looking at consecutive 0-16 seasons. The team also has to find a way to replace longtime star left tackle Joe Thomas. The Browns hold the NFL's longest active playoff drought at 15 seasons and fans don't really trust this process. Jackson, a highly regarded offensive coordinator in Cincinnati Donovan Smith Jersey , is counting on top overall draft pick Baker Mayfield being the team's longtime answer at quarterback. The challenge for Jackson and the Browns is going against the rugged defenses and Super Bowl-winning QBs in Pittsburgh and Baltimore in the AFC North.TODD BOWLES (22-29)Life in the AFC East having to deal with the never-ending juggernaut in New England is almost unfair. Facing Brady and Belichick twice every season is not good for any opposing head coach's job security.Bowles, who received a two-year extension after the 2017 season, is coming off consecutive 5-11 records and has yet to make the playoffs entering his fourth season. Overall, the Jets have failed to reach the postseason for the past seven years. The Jets have to decide on their starting quarterback 鈥?Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater or first-round draft pick Sam Darnold 鈥?and need to show progress in 2018.JAY GRUDEN (28-35-1, 0-1 playoffs)Job security in DC is always an issue. But Gruden will set the record for the longest-serving coach (65 games) since Dan Snyder took over as owner in 1999 in Week 1 of the upcoming season against Arizona.Gruden has made the playoffs once in his first four years and lost to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in the wild-card game after the 2015 season.Gruden's biggest challenge could be at quarterback after Kirk Cousins signed with Minnesota. The team traded for Alex Smith, and the comparisons at the position in the NFC East can be daunting: Dak Prescott, Eli Manning and Carson Wentz 鈥?not to mention Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. As with Garrett in Dallas, Gruden also has to contend with the champs in his division. And there will be comparisons to Jay Gruden's Super Bowl-winning brother, Jon, who has returned to coaching with the Oakland Raiders.DIRK KOETTER (14-18)Koetter will enter his third season in Tampa Bay without starting quarterback Jameis Winston, who will miss the first three games while suspended for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy after a league investigation of an accusation that the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner groped a female Uber driver during a ride in Arizona in March 2016.Koetter also is in a division with two teams with recent Super Bowl appearances (Carolina Vernon Hargreaves Jersey , Atlanta), and getting past them and the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South, especially with Ryan Fitzpatrick making three starts for Tampa Bay, will be tough.VANCE JOSEPH (5-11)Only entering his second season, Joseph's Denver debut was a dud at 5-11 鈥?an avalanche of disappointment by Broncos standards, especially so closely removed from a Super Bowl title. In an attempt to stabilize the QB position that's been troublesome since Peyton Manning retired, the team signed Case Keenum, who led the Vikings to the NFC championship game last season. Joseph needs big production from Keenum and the rest of the offense to support an overworked defense.
  15. Raise your hand if in the final minutes when the San Francisco 49ers punted Aaron Burbridge Jersey , you knew how this game was going to end. I know I did. The moment Josh Rosen hit the field, it was almost clockwork. The 49ers have been in this position several times, and they have always proven that they can blow it. Until they show otherwise, you knew, with Larry Fitzgerald on the field, he would somehow find a way to take one of the worst offenses in the NFL and ruin our lives. So where do we begin with this? How about how the defense wasn’t God-awful this time around. They even generated some turnovers, imagine that. The offense didn’t turn the ball over—another point.k Unfortunately, that’s really all the offense did, nothing. I said if the 49ers didn’t turn the ball over and could generate some turnovers themselves, they were going to win this game. I wrote that not thinking that C.J. Beathard would only complete half of his passes and get only 190 yards on the day. Even I gave him more credit than that. Well, that’s what I get for thinking, I suppose. I really gave them more credit, I wasn’t counting on a full collapse in the final minutes of the game. The 49ers would have won if...The defense could actually hold on. I said if the defense stopped making bonehead mistakes and got some turnovers, the 49ers were walking out of here with a ‘W’. For most of the day the defense played very well. In fact, they actually played their best game. Don’t ask me, ask Richard Sherman. Despite some missed tackles and screen passes of all things manhandling them, the defense was stout. Well, until the last six minutes. Because that’s when all bets were off. The Cardinals stormed downfield and the defense couldn’t get a stop (omitting colorful adjectives on the word “stop”) and blew it. Much like they did with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers and so many other teams. The elegant tank needs to go away for a bit. This roster, this team needs a WIN. Even without Jimmy Garoppolo Jimmie Ward Jersey , they need to show some sort of progress from year one to year two. The Cardinals were it. The 49ers lost because...The offense couldn’t extend a play when it needed to to stop that defensive collapse from happening. The 49ers defense managed turnovers and a safety among other things, but C.J. Beathard was inept. I’ll say it again: 190 yards passing. In the NFL, you either just gashed the ever-loving snot out of a team with a run game or you just couldn’t get anything going in the air. Sure there was the AWESOME Marquise Goodwin touchdown catch which accounted for almost half of Beathard’s passing yards on the day, but so many balls were late or ill timed. The 49ers at some points were making backpedaled leaps to pluck balls out of the sky in an attempt to keep Beathard from losing this game for them. The drive before the final Cardinals touchdown was just predictable. I almost could just time the three and out, and that muffed snap to end the game seemed more than adequate. Before you go out and think this offense is terrible, remember, Beathard is a backup quarterback shoved into an extended role he shouldn’t be. I think we all remember what happened to the Indianapolis Colts after Peyton Manning was out for an entire season due to a neck injury: They wound up with the first pick in the draft. Starting quarterback matters. The 49ers just don’t have someone who can take the team over for the season and keep things normal. If they did, that quarterback would be starting somewhere. Beathard is the best we have, and this was a foregone conclusion when he hit the field. Still a win would be nice.Live updates from Kyle Shanahan Week 3 Friday press conference The San Francisco 49ers head off to Kansas City this weekend, but first, they are wrapping up their practice week in Santa Clara. The team faces the Kansas City Chiefs at 10 a.m. PT Sunday morning, and preparations are going to be just slightly critical against the hottest team in the league. The team will get practice going at 11:45 a.m. PT, after which head coach Kyle Shanahan will meet with the media — at approximately 1 p.m. PT. He will have final details on the injury report, which will be big this week particularly given the questions in the secondary. After Shanahan’s session, the locker room will be open to the media. The 49ers will stream the press conferences Twitter, Facebook, and the team’s app. The 49ers beat writers will also have updates from the media sessions. I’ve embedded our beat writer Twitter list so you can follow along. We’ll have a transcript later today, along with the final injury report.A Twitter List by NinersNation
